Turned it Around!?! Decent Mk2 in Toe?!

Righty ho, after a couple of non-starters and a lack of enthusiasm iv come up with a solution....
Most folk buy a car in a certain guise and decide they wont to mod/put there own touvh to it, well my problem has been i buy a car and end up not having the weather, money, time and a million and one other reasons why i cant do owt and thats about it.
Its not always been the case i had an Oak Green BBM 16V which i bought as a non-runner neways long story shprt got it upto a good standard and then decided to stripit down to restore,then my mortgage application fell through and had a baby and ended up selling for next to nothing and regreted it since i handed over the keys, then in irony my mortgage got approved lol.

So concept is i have a loft full of new and rare bits for mk2 Golfs, and also a shed full of parts and running gear so here it is im going to refurbish as many parts as possible, upgrade yarda yarda then buy a car to fit the bits too!

As it stands want a 90 Spec 3dr MK2 Golf 16v so thats where im heading, so what iv got so far....

Picked up a 9A engine from bristol, decided after all the people using the trust ABF i fancied the old skool bubble 2.0!

Picked her up as a complete engine and i mean complete, wieghed a f**king TON!

So i werent at work today and sun was out so rude not to, got to it and ended up with this....





Previous owner of the engine said it may have been cammed as it came out of his corrado which was rear ended and the guy he bought it from said it was cammed, it werent lol but may have had the KR exhasut cam fitted i guess?!?!

Fairly obvious there no port and polishing happened here ahh well we can all dream.
Suprisingly the engine came apart without any real hick-ups which was really nice except 2 dodgey allen head bolts which i resoved by wacking a 12mm socket over and cracked, only issue i cant get the second 1 out even after sticking it in a vice and knocking a drift through ha!



Ended up with two boxes of parts, 1 to go away for powder coating including manifold and all brakctes and mounts...



And the other is a boxs of all parts, nuts and bolts baged and tagged for future refference although most bolts will be renewed...



Thats the engine anyway so what else i have planned is a rear beam ive had a while is gunna go off for powder coating including brackets etc and ive already got 90% of parts to rebuild it from VW  and then i kept the 16V fuel pump when i sold my old MK2 and again have all the parts to rebuild so thats gunna be happening.
In the man retreat i have a MK3 Subframe i bought ages ago for £10 as it was local and cheap incl wishbones so after cutting the rear strap thingies down and removing the bushes they too will be going for powder coaters....





As some keen eyed peoplemay have noticed there are some S2 twin post carriers in the top r/h corner and there waiting for a refurb, also have some MK4 rear calipers which are waiting for a refurb lol....got alot ot attack!



Picked up and engine stand last week so engine will be going on that the weekend to get the rest of the gear off it and hoping to get it down to a machine shop to be honed and painted ready for rebuild. Gearbox is in form of 02A so that too will be getting a lick of paint.

Future plan are to get rest of bits to run hydro setup for gearbox, Wieted ARB and that just for starts.

So yeah theres my plan have the bits ready and waiting hehe

How are you going to run a cone filter on a K-Jet motor?

I assume u mean the cone filter in the last picture, it was off a ford i had 18 months ago not going to use it just didnt wanna throw it as u never know.

Bit of an update, finally got the engine mounted up onto the stand, was struggling to find the correct lenght bolts and didnt want to pay between £15-£20 for a bad of 50 from screwfix as i only needed four so ended up buying some all thread, some nuts and bolts and shes worked a treat


So after further strip down i relised i hadnt got the correct tool for removing the head bolts so that stopped play until they arrived, a set of XZN keys which were quite resonable at just under £12 incl of postage


Have to excuse the crap pics (iphone), after i got the head off obviously got pistons out and then after a struggle with the crankshaft sprocket which was really fun got the seals off each end and crankshaft out and finally the intermediate shaft so block is completely naked now.






originally this was meant to be a backward build with the last peace of the puzzle being the vehicle this stuff would go in.....well i saw this and could not resist, should be ok with a 2.0 16v in shouldnt it??


Once the pistons were out gave them a good spray with some carb cleaner and left em to soak for a little bit then gave em a scrub with a small spark plug wire brush and came up well



I must admit im abit concerned though as all four pistons have scratches on the skirts



whats peoples thoughts on these? the cylinder walls have no marks in them so not concerened about the block, will be getting honed anyway and checked for tolerence but will these pistons be re-usable? the marks arent deep cant be felt with finger ther just feel smoothe??

Wont you need to get oversized pistons anyway? Or not reboring at same time just honing?

Im gunna have it inspected and if its still within tolerence then ill just get it honed as the cylinders are in good condition and fit a new set of piston rings, but if they are FUBAR then obviously if im speding 100's on new pistons gunna have to go higher spec with the engine which isnt a bad thing but would be nice if i could put that money somewhere else lol

Been a while but alot has happened, recently bought a MK2 GTI shell from a forum member for the reasonable sum of £50 so after paying £100 to get it back home to say i wasnt pleased is being nice, i was told it needed a few holes in the floor welding up but every where else was sound, it wasnt.




Neway was gunna try and save it but then relised the drivers chassis leg was bent from an accident at some point in its life, so after buying a whole chassis leg off a breaker this came up on ebay about 4 miles away from my house.







Besides the few dents and obvious bits missing, for the grand some of £120 i think iv done well 
when i got it back started stripping it down in the hunt for rust.





Bit of a strange fish this one bits have been removed but pretty random stuff and other stuff just broken which is always great! Random crap i found along the way.


Still has the first aid box bracket and warning triangle straps.


After looking at the floor i was pretty happy 99% sound all sills near mint no rot excexpt for a couple of small areas.




1 small hole under the rear bench.


1 in the rear turret where the fuel filler neck bracket has gone.


Abit seeping through behind turrets.



Found abit of a leak! not a shock concidering the bonnet has been off for god knows how long.


Stripped out.


And the biggest shocker a mint MK2 door membrane.


Really appologise for pic quality just quick ones i have taken as iv gone along on my iphone. All in all the cars been pretty good and doesnt seem to have ever been messed with as alot of the parts iv removed have been as if the came from the factory.

At the minute im missing a few bits if anyone could help PM me.

Fuel lines from in tank sender to accumulator
Dash surround
Front seat belts
Scuttle tray
ECU cover
Headlight (Drivers Side)
Passenger wing (Silver would be nice)

Probly think of more as i go along.
