How to roll golf arches....
« on: 01 August 2004, 02:33 »
Wanna fit a some 17" alloys to my Mk2 golf which has been lowered 40mm.. ive been told they have an offset of et37 meaning this should not cause a problem with rubbing etc.. If i do need to roll them how hard is it to do a DIY job..

Any thoughts?

From what i understand you need specilist equipment, Without that, Then the whole job becomes a DIY no no.

You might wanna speak to kniterider on here I remember he told me he had fabricated a rolling tool from some mullgrips and bearing shells I think.
Not an easy job by any means though, put a crease in your wing and it's game over.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

clean out all the sh!t that's under the lip of your arch. if you don't it'll show up on the outside. if you have plastic arches like me then remove these. then using a hammer and dolly gentley tap the lip up and out of the way. You don't have to do the whole arch, just the top 1/3 where the tyre would hit. do the tapping in small ammounts and you should be ok. the plastic arches will reattach at the bottoms fine, but the tops will need to be stuck back on as you've just rolled away the point where they use to rivot/screw on.

failing that you can make an arch rolling tool with a scissor jack.

if you use a hammer like dizzie said put something like a block of wood against the outside of the arch cos you will probably widen the arch without a bit of support the other side.

and use tiger seal or similar where the lip has been pushed up and maybe waxoyl first cos water will just sit between the gap ;)

So its possible to do DIY then... cool.. Well the 17" wheels and tyres just not fit.. will they rub from standard or is it on big bumps and at certain locks?

cheers

all depends how much you've lowered the car by. with a -60mm drop like mine it rubbed all the time on the back and rubbed really bad when you steered. that was with 2 people in there. After rolling the arches it only caught on the back when I was 4/5 up.
