Oil filter leak???
« on: 01 May 2009, 17:30 »
Got an oil leak! Gave the valver a service couple weeks back and ever since it has been leaking oil. It seems to be coming from the back of the oil filter. When i fitted the new filter, i wiped any dirt away, oiled the rubber ring on the filter and did it up hand tight, it threaded on fine, def not a cross thread.

After trawling through old pages on here i see a couple other people have had the problem.

Is it just a case that i got a dodgy oil filter seal and should just get another filter and see if that works? It only leaks when the engines running and theres oil pressure and is more than little drip! I reckon im losing approx a litre per 150 miles ish

Cheers !!

You should change the washer/seal when you change the filer mate really.

The leak is probably coming from the oil cooler adaptor that you screw the oil filter to.

It has an 'o' ring at the top end of it where it attaches to the engine block mounting bracket. The 'o' ring gradually hardens with age and then leaks. Take care not to overtighten the oil filter to the oil cooler adaptor, otherwise you can distort the adaptor - result more leaks.

Is this also referred to as a oil filter housing? I remember having it changed but it made no difference ... the only thing left now is a oil sump gasket as ive had my oil filter changed several times too.
