Bad thumping noise under load... 8v PB 1990

... it is worse at about 50mph. Continuos thuming perhaps 3 times a second.

It goes away when you coast.

Brand new CV joints fitted on all 4 joints.

Have been given the idea that it's perhaps an engine mount. (the front mount is brand new).

There is some play in the output from the diff... are there bearings in there that can go? Is that a big job? (happy to remove the GB.. thats no drama.)

Any thoughts/ ideas/ experience are welcome.

Was the grease on the CV joints properly worked around the joints?

yep, as best i could. plenty of it in there too

Tough one to call.  Not sure how it could be tired engine mounts.    Sounds more likely to be a knackered diff in the gearbox to me.

yeah, thats what i thought... surely engine mounts would be one big thump when putting ur foot down.

ever taken a diff apart? could be the bearings if there are some there.

getting hacked off with it now... spent lots of money recently to make it 'nice' and it just keeps wanting more!

VR6 is looking like an option...

Well it now has 2 new engine mounts... still vibrating badly...

bloody thing... i even gave it new HT leads, seat clips, alsorts this month and it's still giving me grief!!!!

i had an exhaust knocking ect under load on the tunnel and beam. just a thought

thanks, but pretty sure its not that. too regular and very bad noise on full lock. will investigate the diff/ cv joints

turns out it was an inner cv joint on the passenger side. went over a small hump back bridge and it broke.

bit annoyed as it was recently replaced but i now have that feeling of driving a super smooth mk2 gti again! all fixed in an hour and free as i used spares accumulated over the years!

just though i'd share it incase anyone searches.

PS Good job it didnt happen last week in Belgium or yesterday in cornwall!
