Which Fuel for 90 16V?

Took delivery of my latest project today a 1990 1.8 16V MK 11.
Can anyone advise fuelling requirements? Can it take unleaded?
Drove it the 10 mile journey home and it smoked like a chimney all the way - wife was following behind me and was choking - seemed to get better towards the end of the journey. Smoke from the exhaust seems worse at idle - absolutely pours out? Could it be something to do with the fact that it's been sitting motionless in a field for 6 months or is it just shagged out? 137k miles
Doesn't really matter as it will probbly be getting a TSR 2.1 or summat like it eventually but would be nice to make it last a while longer as there is a fair bit to be spent first?
regards

Use any fuel which is RON 98, leaded fuel is not a requirement.
Try running the car for a bit, see if some of smoke calms down.
Maybe do a little service on her, then take her for a long motorway thrash.

depends on what colour the smoke was!
black is unburned fuel..... which means the fuel isnt burning properly...... the cause mostly plugs leads dissy rotor arm.... etc...
or if its blue then thats oil burning! which means oil is passed either the pistons / rings or valve guide seals...
i'd run the engine for abit and see how you go!
if its sat for 6 month then it will smoke!
when my mate first brought his mk 2 now has mk 3 he took a relative whos a ford mechanic! when he when to buy it! the car had been there for a while the underbonnet was abit mossified!
basicly it wasnt used everyday so was abit mess....
and he said when he fired it up coulds came out and it was enough to put him off! but after it was warm and he started to rev it high it cleared and he did a few thumb on the dip stick tests for oil pressure and the engine was quiet....... the oil buzzer on also on!
but the mechanic said it was ok! and it was! he got the buzzer sorted.....wiring fault........
and he had the pump done just incase it was that but it wasnt!............

Cool - thanks for the replies guys!
As I said, the engine will be getting changed eventually but don't wanna have to dig deep right away!
