Running Rich?
« on: 06 April 2009, 11:50 »
Hi

Have a feeling the valver is running rich. Few things make me think this:
1. Occasionally if the car has been started and driven for only a couple of minutes then switched off and then couple of minutes later started, it doesnt fire up instantly and takes a couple of turns on the key.
2. Once started from cold and revved a little, " apparently" two of my mates say there is a fair bit of black smoke coming out. I know it would be on choke but when they describe it seems a little bit too much smoke!
3. Very occasionally I can smell fuel/fumes when i have only been driving a few minutes.
4. Mate was working on his jetta, sat on floor facing his wheel. i was parked in front about 4 meters away and started it up, he said he could smell real real stong fumes. I know he was near level with the pipe, not far away and it was on choke again he reknd it was real smelly and when i got out and was standing beside my car i thought i could smell it aswell.
5. The mpg on the car is okay once warm and cruising but its absolutely diabolical when on choke, i.e twon driving but as easy as poss on throttle is giving me like 15mpg until warmed!!!

Like my previous posts sorry for the essay but any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

TBH I dont see anything out of the ordinary! If you werent getting normal mpg then I'd say as BB has plus the oxygen sensor (lambda).
But what you are describing sounds normal to me on start up.

Sounds about right ... well the 15mpg on cold start anyway. I do get the occasional RANDOM fuel smell, but this is occasionally.

Dunno mate, got to realise our cars are literally ancient, best thing to do, from a non-mechanics view is basically to keep it serviced regularly and change the obvious bits & bobs when ever you have spare cash to spend.
