advice please...spay or not to spray?!
« on: 07 March 2009, 10:11 »
ive just bought a J reg mk2 8v gti in tornado red and the paint work is fair for the age but there is a few rust spots here and there. Until i have the cash for a full respray im wondering whether or not to sand, treat and touch up these rust areas. I cant drive the car until mid may anyway which gives me the time to get it looking better i know that i wont get a show car look but its going to look better than rust isnt it?!. Its going to be at least 6 months before i can save to do a proper job so will i be better to spray or leave?!

What particular locations are the areas that have rust mate??

If you can get away with it Id use some waxoil to dry out the moisture and temporarily protect, pending where your problems lie!

There is about 6 blobs (50p size maybe a bit bigger) below the plastic trim on the sides and the same on the tailgate and a tiny bit on the drivers side sill. Ive had a go on the sill today, i sanded down the rust, treated, primed and sanded. Then i gave it a few coats of paint its looking good at the minute i will give it a t-cut in a few days. Do you have any idea on how long aerosol paint takes to dry enough to t-cut and polish?!

Meant to leave it for at least 7days to fully dry and harden before sanding or t-cutting.

That info is from a guide in a practical classics mag issue.

How hard was it to do yourself?

I have a tornado red car too also with some rust spots, pretty much the exact situation as you. I was going to have an attempt myself too.

Did you just use spray cans from VW? Can I ask for a pic of the finished result?

hey..cheers for that..
yea it went well i thought, i used the tornado red halfords suply i got on ok with it, i put plenty of primer on then gave it a few coats of paint preperation was the hardest bit really but its improved it enormously for now. I just did it in light coats so i got no drips and it was fine i will give it a tcut at the weekend to see how it looks, its well worth a go i spayed the drivers sill heres a photo of it sprayed...

Nice bed sheets  But got job on the painting, something I'd never dare attempt myself!
