Timescale to change two front wheel bearings?
« on: 08 March 2009, 11:18 »
Hi

Having bought a 1991 GTD at the beginning of Feb I put it in the garage and havent used it as I am in my first year at uni. I'm going home next Thursday and am going to bring it up to uni after the weekend.

I know it needs a new front wheel bearing (not sure which one) so I have bought two new front bearing kits, a set of GTI discs and pads, and two new bottom ball joints as I will have to take all these parts off just to get to the bearings

I want to be quite organised with this so I can allow for anything out of the ordinary. I'm getting home at about six on Thursday night, how feasable is it to remove both carriers in about 2-3 hours. I have replaced a CV boot on a mk2 before so I know what it looks like and I also have the tools. Assuming I get all that done, i'm goign to take the hubs on Friday morning to a garage  I used to help out at to get the bearings pressed out and in. Then on Friday I can put it all back together.

Has anyone got any tips for this job that might make it go smoother so I can maybe expect some parts of it to take a little longer than I was hoping? Am i being optimistic on my timescale?
I read in the haynes that i have to mark where the hub connected to the strut so it would be properly aligned, is this just a quick way of doing that or should it be aligned by a garage?
Phew, well after thats done I only need to do the front engine mount and put some decent 5w40 oil in it.

Thanks
Will

Providing none of the bolts are seized and you've got the right tools - it shouldn't take long.

I did the two front wheel bearings and a bunch of other things in about 4 hours, and I was working slow.
