lol with the saxo mate, i knew mk3 8v's were pretty slow but didnt think they were that slow! ive only driven 1.4 and 1.9 tdi mk3's... mk2's FTW.

whats the abf going into mk1,mk2? im planning an abf swap for my mk2.

If your gonna spend on a mk3 8v tho... exhust manifold, stainless exhaust, fairly stiff suspension, intake(whatever you choose), strip as much weight as you can, good grippy tyres, big-ish brakes, front upper and lower strut braces, rear strut brace, AQY head (intake at the front rather than the back of the head ;) coupled with some nice sounding carbs.

Or sell it and get a vr6, with all the money you would spend on an 8v you could use the sold 8v money and other funds to do the basics on a nice VR. You can get the vr's quite cheap these days.

People go off on one.....they gloat how fast their car is faster! Face it...it is not how fast, it is the drive.

Best you can do is, remap +9, or go all out and get a supercharger....but that is £££££

16v was in reply to another post.

the best mods for 8v have allready been mentioned in this thread and others  but there is no point doing them if people have unrealistic expectations.
you can go to 170 bhp with couterflow head  but thats about it  there just ain't anymore there   and that costs.

as has been said menay times before in meany topics but once again heer we go

head off,  sort the ports  else it's allways going to crap.

give it a cam  kent gs2h or 266 degrees and 11.2mm lift  at least.

give it an exhaust to breath through  4-2-1 is optimal  and 2 1/2 inch to the tail pipe

now it'll need some air so a pannel filter will help

now the ecu will be holding it back,  it needs a tweek to stop it trying to protect the cat    and then some bigger squirters ( good luck sorting the ecu )

there you answerd the qusetion again but it was probaly pritty much pointless.   don't do the headwork the ports will allways strangel it and reduce effectivness of all the other mods,   don't need an all out race head  just tidyed up and opend out the the gaskets and a bit of valve seat work  will make a nice differance.

oh btw can't call me hypocrite :P  i have had more 8 valve golfs than you can shake a stick at, infact still have one and it even comes out occasionaly.     have also built and tuned countles  8v motors for myself and others and even pulled 100bhp per ltr out of an 8 valve to prove a point when i liked them.  but i got bored of them and they ran out of room for development.

To be honest there isnt much difference in the 8v and 16v, you'll end up paying twice as much for one but get no where near twice as much performance. 8v feels lot more torque low end also which is great and a real bonus over the 16v.

Don't listen to the 16v girls i think there bitter they paid so much for ragged cars that they try and belittle people lol

Of course there is a difference between the 8v's and 16v's otherwise why would VW have made them in the first place.

8v = easy to drive, nothing really to special about them as they are a grossly underpowered engine in a large comfort car.

16v = high end power if you don't mind thrashing the tits off it to get it (as per design), again though, underpowered for such a large car.

If you want to tune it on a budget, a 16v will always stand you in better stead than an 8v will.
