i have a 8v digi on a 1990 plate that just wont rev clean and sometimes fails to start.

i have changed all plugs, leads and stuff and ecu but still the same HELP

cheers for any advice in advance

Get yourself a new VW OEM blue temperature sender and then follow Rubjohny's guide in the Maintenance section. Borrow or buy  a strobe light. Te CO setting is less of an issue than the timing. The see how it goes before trying other things.
