G60 Brakes Conversion
« on: 16 February 2009, 17:49 »
Before I start, I'd like to say I've searched and searched (myself and using the feature on this forum) and nothing I'm after has come up.

What I have is a standard Mark 2 Golf GTi 8 valve from 1991 (J reg) with a Digifant engine (PB code).

What I want to do is put the G60 brakes on it instead.

But here's the catch. What the heck are the G60 brakes that everyone seems to go on about and use? The Golf G60 ones, Corrado...?!

Second, what do I need to do it? I'm looking for a total overhaul of the braking system, so I assume the following will be needed;

New master cylinder
New brake lines
New brake calipers
New brake discs
New brake pads

What else will I need? And where can I get these parts from, GSF or scrap yard? Would rather pay the money and get new parts, but if I can only get them from dead cars then so be it.

Many thanks for anyone who takes the time to basicly write me a "How to:" guide on this.

New master cylinder
New brake lines
New brake calipers

Right, please excuse the very dumb talk here, but I need to make sure I know exactly what I'm looking at.

This G60 Hub/Bearing you're talking about. I take it that's the bit that bolts onto the end of the axle/driveshaft (which is it, or both?!) So would reading a Haynes manual explain how to take the original one off, then just use logic to put the G60 one on?

I take it this part is only available from a VW breakers yard? And the calipers, discs and pads just then fit exactly the same as any breaks? Also, master cylinder straight swap, no need to re-map the ECU or change any wiring?

ok the "hub" part is the piece that is missing in this picture

you can unbolt the bottom of the strut , the track rod end , bottom ball joint and the driveshaft nut

you will need the camber setting up afterwards

the master cylinder is a straight swap nothing needs reprogramming as there is nothing electrical there

you'll need to bleed the brakes well as there will be a lot of air in them when your finished

i bought all my setup from a VW breaker

Is it a realitively easy job, as in unbolt standard hub and attatch the new one? I assume the camber can be done with a home mechanic's tools?

How much did your setup cost roughly?

And would you say it's worth doing? Considering I'm planning to put around 150 BHP in my Golf at some stage.

Technically the hub is the bit with the 4 threaded holes that spins round, the bearing carrier is what the hub is pressed into and the caliper carriers bolt to, but generally most people call the entire assembly the 'hub'.

Pretty much any if not all 4 stud VW/SEAT with 256+ brakes has the hub/bearing carrier you need, Passats in particular are a good source of cheap ones, but also found on Ibizas, Corrado, MK3s and even later Polos.  Then you need the 280mm caliper & carrier, commonly known as 'G60' as thats what the Golf G60 got as std.  But they're also fitted to several 4 stud VW/SEAT models, Corrado, higher spec Ibiza, even 5 stud MK3 GTI ones will work as long as you get the 280mm setup not 288mm.

You can even use 256 calipers on 280mm carriers, but you need to use 256mm pads and the slightly thinner carrier sometimes wont fit over a 280mm disc without using part worn pads or grinding a little off the slider pins.

I'm not being funny, so don't take this the wrong way, but if you don't know what the G60 set up is, then why do you want to fit them? If your brakes work then I don't see the point of upgrading to such large brakes unless you intend to upgrade your power as well. The 239 or 256 are more than up to the job for 112bhp in a light car.
It seems like alot of work, hassle and money just so that you can say you have G60 brakes.

yes

I assume the camber can be done with a home mechanic's tools?
nope mate needs full alignment tools to be set properly , local tyre shop should do it for you

How much did your setup cost roughly?
mine was about 80 euros for the brakes , and about 50 for other stuff

And would you say it's worth doing? Considering I'm planning to put around 150 BHP in my Golf at some stage.
yes it is , i boiled my brakes on the nurburgring with the standard poop and i dont think i will with this set up ,
plus i am doing a VR6 conversion so wanted the bigger brakes because of the extra power/weight

Ok thanks. I'm doing brakes first, then suspension setup then finally the engine will be changed for something with a bit more power. Well, maybe a lot more, haven't decided yet!

Thanks for all the tips and help guys, and no offence has been taken from any comments.
