ABF bottom end With KR head
« on: 05 March 2009, 03:32 »
I read a topic about this somewhere a while ago,and cant find it now, was wondering if it works, I know the kr head flows better, has a higher lift cam, and bigger valves so on paper sounds good but is it ?

Yes it can be done but if yours is an ABF then I don't think you would gain much.

if its a flowed head then it might be worth it, if std then no. also the combustion chamber on kr head is too small and may result in piston contact.
actualy the abf head is the best flowing standard 16v one, and cams arguably also best oem cams available. some prefer the profiles of the kr cams tho.

Ah cool, Im trying to find some extra go with out spending the earth, so this seemed like anice option, the thread I read on the subject said the guy who had done it was making around 167 bhp, with a decat system and air filter and that was a standard head that aint bad

id only go to all the bother of a head swap for a flowed jobber :)
if you can find a pair of kr cams cheap its not too bad a job to swap over.  VW were a bit conservative with the 150bhp power rating so even std abf cars often get more, decat frees up a fair few hgorses as well.  That plus not all rolling roads are created equal, it would have been better to see power figures before & after on the same rollers :)

For example, in my MK2 I had a bog std MK3 2.0 8v 2e lump, std MK2 digi head, cam & injection system, std zaust etc etc.  I got 142BHP, which tbh is a little on the high side!  For comparison a completly std MK2 8v GTI went on straight after me and got 127bhp ;)
