Mk1 83 GTI Cab engine upgrade?

hi all, just brought Mk1 83 cab GTI, one owner from new, 80K only. I don't think the car has ever been driven so hard, as the engine only lasted 5 days, until it broke down on me (head gasket went...   made a really funny ticking noise for all of about a minute) I've already got the engine out and rebuilding it (rebuilt a few Mk1 engines in my time only to standard spec though), but was wondering what performance upgrades I can go for these days? I've been out of the VW scene for a while.
