a/c service
« on: 20 February 2009, 18:01 »
Car's due for a service soon, 2 years old.
I had the service reminder from the dealer and also a separate reminder to get the a/c serviced.
In my opinion the a/c service is unnecessary, but my concern of course is will I have any problems if I have to make a warranty claim relating to the a/c.
I have e-mailed VW and asked if this is necessary to protect the warranty or just a recommendation, but frankly I'm not holding my breath for a reply.
Has anyone else had anything in writing from VW on this matter?
Thanks.

waste of money, mine is 2 years old, but unless it smells bad, I wouldnt bother.  as for warranty, I doubt it would affect your warranty.

IMO if the ac is working properly just replace the cabin filter...

A proper aircon service should have the gas removed, vacume and test the lines. Re-fill with the correct weight of gas and the correct amount of oil in the lines.

Plus the bacterial stuff in the evaporater box.

The gas charge will decay over time, the mosture may build up in the aircon lines/system.

Got mine done free at 2 years service - however the aircon compressor and some other bits had to be replaced under warranty to get a free re-gas

Problem was the air wasn't blowing cold enough so the dealer contacted VW who advised them to change a few parts.

Saved me a few quid though

Just an update.

I've received a reply from VW confirming the a/c service is just a recommendation and does not affect the warranty.

So if any dealer tries to tell you otherwise you can challenge them with confidence.

Cheers.

Agreed.  And you most definately would NOT get that at somewhere like Thik-Fit or Halfrauds.

Agreed again - but if used correctly, air con systems can be fully serviceable even on a car 8 years old - so this tosh spewed out by the stealers is just another money-grabbing excerise.
