exactly as if were changing valve stem seal,

remove cyl head,  remove cam,  remove tappet,   compress valve sping, remove collets,  release spring,  remove spring retainers, ineer and outer spring lower reatainers,  push offending valve out,   pop off stem seal,  offer up new  valve,  check valve stem is ok in guide, guide may have been damaged and require replaceing,  if guide ok oil it grind new valve to seat,  put it all back together.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

ok just as I suspected but the main thing Im panicking about is the cams and cam chain thing how do I know its timed up right when im done or will it only go back in one way?

and valve seat grinding is this a pro job as ive just been reading up and looks very complicated? and it be done at home?

iirc  it's the same as the 16v,    there are marks on the sprockets  like

put the marked teeth so they are pointing at each other, fairly easy with it been chain it's ether right or it's not.

valve grinding is quite easy but it's one of those things that other people do
