Cat pee
« on: 12 August 2003, 12:09 »
My ventilation system smells like cat pee, when air blows out of the vents just underneath the stereo. The smell goes away if you switch on the aircon.

Anyone had this problem or knows what it is?

Cheers

DO you get a misty windscreen when the car is left parked up ?

it doesn't mist up

First I thought the aircon needs gassing, but that doesn't seem to be the case because the smell goes away when you turn on the aircon, and that works fine.

Never mind, a strong airfreshener clipped to the offending vent seems to make it a little more bearable.

I was thinking of a leaking heater matrix which would allow the smell of coolant into your car, you should get a misty windscreen when your matrix leaks. Take the plenum cover off and the bonnet and have a good nose around, might be something stuck in the fan. If it was the aircon it would as you say make it more when its running.

I didn't mean to imply that you need to take your bonnet off, I think I was half asleep when I typed it in, I meant to say that something is amiss in your engine bay and you need to have a good look around. Might be wise to take it to an air con specialist to get it checked over as it might be something that you wouldn't think of and they could pin point straight away.

I took it to my VW specialist. He said that it's probably due to water trapped by the condenser, and mold / fungus starts to grow over time which causes the smells.

There is a special kind of spray that can be used to treat it, so I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the help.

I've heard of that spray too but can't remember it's bloody name...

Try checking that the area around the cabin filter is clear. I had a similar problem in mine and it was also misting up quite a lot. Checked this out and it was full of damp leaves and other sh1te. I cleaned it all out and gave the area a wipe down with a good household cleaner and replaced the filter for good measure (about a tenner).

Presto Hey! Clean smelling cabin!

Worth a try before you start handing over valuable beer tokens to the air-con guys...
