thread timelimit warning
« on: 01 February 2009, 11:44 »
OK, if you have found an old thread which is on topic, and you decide to revive said thread with a fresh on topic post - you get a 'red letter' warning about how old the thread is, do you want to post, blah blah blah - which may put off peeps posting in that thread, and just starting a new one - with possibly the same questions, and the same answers - like use the search function, etc.

So, my thought / suggestion would be: can the admins remove that timelimit warning?  It would hopefully reduce the amount of forum "searching", which I gather is quite 'server-intensive' - and basically keep the forum section index pages a tad cleaner.

Good idea, or not?

I don't quite understand - if the person has found the thread with the correct info in it, why would they then be put off by the alert and ask the same question?

If they don't find the answers they want and are put off by the warning then there's nowt wrong with starting a new thread. Main benefit though is it stops 'necroposting' - particularly in the classifieds.

Cause it has a big warning in red letters about being an old thread.  Go to page 423 of the index page of one of the sub forums ( or whatever was the very first or oldest thread), type a reply, and then hit the post button.  Scaredy cats may get frightened!

If they don't find the answers they want and are put off by the warning then there's nowt wrong with starting a new thread.

Yebut, once they have started the new thread, you then get the stock answer "use the search function", etc.  One of the mods here even has a pic of the search function as a sig pic (Rhyso, I think).

OK, it is fine and reasonable for someone to use the search function initially to find if sommat has previously been asked and/or answered - but then if you are 'encoraged' to start a new thread, and then get told to search again, it becomes a bit self depreciating - and it does clog the index pages.  Just look at the Mk5 section, and there are two (or is it now three) virtually idential threads on the DSG, and two on the S3 intercooler . . . .

Main benefit though is it stops 'necroposting' - particularly in the classifieds.

Fairy-nuff, didn't fink of vat!  Can classifieds be set to 'lock' by default after a period of inactivity?  Or the timelimit warning be lifted from certain sections of the forum?

Nah it's a global setting. It may have it's drawbacks, but it does more good than harm in the overall picture.

I get annoyed because when I search, the first page or two of results are posts with a question similar to my own, then one response - use the search function, then locked by slick.

The post should just be deleted, not just locked :undecided:
