MFA only half working?!?!?!

i recently got my self an 89 gti 8v but the MFA dont work properly! the oil temp just reads -- -- and the outside temp used to work but now when you click through it doesnt even stop on it it just jumps right over and goes back to the time any ideas???

i assume its just sensors but im buggered if i know where they are and dont want to buy new ones in case i dont actually need them?? u get me fam?!?!?! lol  http://

the 8v oil temp sensor is on the oil filter housing, its the small one with a white coloar, the wire to it is green/black.  it wil read --- till the oil gets over 50 degrees tho
as for outside temp will be skipped over if the sensor has come unplugged, its behind the wing on the passenger side, clipped into a hole at bumper level. they often fall out o the hole then eventually the sensor falls off the wiring loom

any clues as to where the outside temp sensor is located and how many wires should be going to it i found one just behing the head light that was just floating around with nothing on the end of it but i had 3 wires going to it i assume i found the wrong one?!?!?!?!  help please!!!!!

it is inside the left front wheel arch on my ED1

but it is a LHD car so check both sides

its 2 pin, 1 white is white/red
its actually below the battery tray, the wire dissapears thru a hole just in front of the battery.
