If you're going to the expense and time of a conversion, chose something that can develop so not an 2L 8v gti. Im converting my 8v gti in the near future and still haven't made up my mind. If you go for straight swap then it has to be a 16v at the least.
If you can stretch to welding new mounts etc then be different with a pd130 or 150 diesel. Every one has 1.8t. Personally i'm either going the diesel route, a 16vt or a r36. Have a look over at clubgti too.

P.s don't forget to uprate your breaks.

If your going to do it, then go for the Vr6, your best bet is to pick up a donor car as you will need to change nearly everything, Rad, gearbox, clutch pedal assy, all the front susp set up, etc / etc.

Also worth bearing in mind you will need a engineers report and you insurance will be a lot more than a factory Vr6.

unless your car has been seriously modded cosmetically, cut your losses and pick up a cheap VR.. they're going for pennies these days

As said you could convert the car to 2.0 or vr power......but you'll need to uprate the brakes and suspension (the 1800se only has solid discs and drums, oil shocks and comes with the std anti roll bars and suspension arms!). If you go ahead I would buy a full car and transfer the engine, gearbox, ecu, suspension and brakes as a job lot oh and if you go for a vr or 16v you also need the hydralic clutch assembly

Think you would need to do something that isnt factory (16v or vr6) as it is just a complete waste of time and money... also bare in mind insurance will be a pia as i assume you chose a 1.8 for that reason in the first place...

I'd say even though your car is solid, it's still worth buying a VR6 instead.. you might only need to add a few hundred quid if you sell yours and you've just saved a lot of time, hassle and worry
