Hi, I have recently bought a 2nd hand MK5 GTI (Feb 08) and I get a grinding scraping noise on full lock - only turning right and only on full lock, it doesnt happen the other way, its not hugely loud but it doesnt sound nice? Does this happen for anyone else, what could it be?

Also is it a feature of the GTI to be a little lumpy when cold and at low revs, has a bit of a clunky note to the engine when clutch engages? Doesnt seem to affect the drive just sounds unusual..

Thanks for any replies,

the sound of the engine you are talking about mine is exactly the same and when clutch engages it drive fine no problems at all even had the noise checked out by a vw tech and he said they all sound pretty much the same?

Sounds like the well know steering rack fault.  Its a very common prob with newer VW's not just golfs.  The cure is a new steering rack and even then people are complaining that the fault is reappearing on the new racks.  If you're under warranty you shouldn't have too much hassle getting it changed.
