Just a quickie! The banana washers that sit behind the driveshaft spline bolts...are they required or can I use normal washers of the same thickness???

I don't see any problems with fitting washers. Why, have you 'misplaced' one? Don't mix washers and 'banana' washers as you call them. You could end up with an inbalance and thus vibration.

I expect the banana washers are there to help spread the load? If vw fitted them then I would do the same, some things you shouldnt take risks with

Not only are they 'shaped', they also have ridges which help lock the bolt.
Don't fit plain ones.
