ABF Clutch cable problem
« on: 11 January 2009, 22:08 »
Done the ABF conversion with the cable box. Only problem now is I can't get any tension on the clutch cable  The pedal just goes flat too the floor. Worryingly the arm on top of the gear box doesn't spring back and seems quite loose. Me thinks this is why the cable isn't tight. Is it the release bearing that causes this? . Its the 16v box whats the worst that can of happened. Also it has the self adjusting cable which is really long, can't find one anywhere to see if this is the problem.  Any help greatly appreciated

sounds like something is misplaced,   don't have a long pushrod hanging around thats just appeared do you ?

sounds like the release plate ( bearing ) in the center of the pressure plate isn't theer or the rod that pushes against it,   you can check to see if the rod is teher with the box on  by prying off the end cap of the gearbox, may be possible to fit with box inplace as well  with some curseing.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Where the lever is there is a pin that goes into the box which if you pull it gently it springs back in. Not sure what else should be there .

Would try a new cable but can't seem to locate one at the moment, for some reason there are none listed for my car that are the right size??.

Is it the SEAT gearbox you're using? If so the cable you need is a SEAT Ibiza ABF cable :)

if its the old MK2 box, lift the box lever up by hand, how far does it go before it locks up?  Buy a new one listed for a 1989 1.6 Driver, this will be the manual adjustible type :)

Ive had the cable off the car to take a closer look. The adjuster seems to have had it, so ive clipped it together with the plastic clips in the middle so its on the smallest setting. When you press the pedal there isn't any pressure until your foot is virtually on the floor. could the pedal be closer to the gearbox  than it was in the toledo?? I'm clutching at straws here. Ive took a piccy of the lever and the cable. Its 6 foot long!!.  Danny how do I know if the push rod is in correctly  :undecided:

Ive pulled the boot back and there is a pin located there.

The lever gets to about 90 degrees then there is resistance, is this right?

Have you had the engine and 'box apart?

The Toledo clutch cable should work just fine.  Mine does, as does Danny's.  Are you getting the cable hooked over the clutch pedal correctly?  It really should 'just work'.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Ive put it back exactly how it came off. It can only go on the pedal one way it then loops round and atatches the gearbox?  The engine and box have not been apart so I'm hoping its something relatively simple, going to phone seat today and get a new cable. Fingers crossed.
