Title: Have I bought a Lemon???????
Post by: Tonic on 23 June 2003, 21:49
Just bought a Clipper Cabriolet in metalic bronze. Beautiful car, not bad condition for year, 1989, perfect hood etc...
The day after I bought it, I noticed that the engine appears to be running hot, although the temperature gauge hardly moves, could this be the thermostat not working??
Second problem, when you rev the car up above 3500rpm the oil warning light comes on and buzzes. I've done a complete oil change, changed the filter and replaced the pressure switch on top of the filter, but not on the block.  I don't think its big ends as the engine runs smoothly, although fast (tick over 11-1200rpm) and there is no knocking from the engine.. Any suggestions, I'm starting to think I judged a book by its cover..... ???

Try dismantling and flushing the cooling system. Check the water pump and radiator for any crap in the way.

My GTI was running really hot before I did this. It seemed to have bought the running temp down a bit.

Good luck

Thanks Jelly, I'll give it a go. I was also told today by a Vdub specialist that along with the water cooling system, it may be a clogged oil pump, I'll check that out as well and post any progress.

How did it go tonic??  My Golf runs a little hot sometimes and idles at about the same, unless I've been giving it a hard time in which case it sometimes idles at about 1500rpm..

I've flushed the system and changed the thermostat, the temperature gauge still doesn't seem to move above cold though even when the cars been running a while.
I've changed the oil pump today but this doesn't seem to have had much effect either ???
The warning light is still coming on and sounding the alarm??? I am at a loss...
Has anyone else had similar problems? I read an ad on ebay for a GTi that has similar problems and the bloke reckoned it was electrical and nothing to do with the engine.  I just want to know that the engine isn't going to go bang when I'm driving it...
Any advise greatly appreciated
Cheers

Try checking all your electrical connections to the sensors around the engine.......they are prone to deterioration and poor/loose contact

i have the same problem with my '83 cab regarding the oil light and buzzer (read a previous thread) but only intermitently, changed the pressure switch on the side of the head which seemed to have solved the problem then a couple of weeks later  the problem has arisen again but like yourself i beleive it's an indication problem as the engine sounds ok, this seems to be a common problem as i have read  a few letters lately regarding this problem one being in the problem letter pages of VW Motoring for the reply you will have to check the magazine, if i can find it i will post another repy

I have a Clipper Cab, 86.  My temp light is always flashing (no buzzer though) but the temp gauge still works.  I've had to black out the bulb as its too distracting.  Its an electrical fault.  As for cabs running hot, its notorious im afraid.  Try washing you car after you have been out for a drive ! the steam coming off your bonnet is amazing ! *lol* ... but my temp needle never goes past the 1/2 way mark...if it does its only for a few mins and then stays 1/2 way.

Enjoy ! Cabs are the best :-)

Try using wetter water in your coolant and extralube zx1 in your oil. Both are better at dissipating heat, and extralube is suppost to be a much advanced oil addative which can increase engine life by some amazing figures...
"Virtually eliminates surface friction and drag, reduces surface wear by up to 90%, reduces fuel consumption up to 10%, prevents metal to metal contact even beyond the boiling point of oils. " - Extralube ZX1 (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue/product_detail.asp?CLS=ROAD&TLGRP=R009&CODE=ZX1733&PGRP=RP081&GRP=RP081&PCODE=ZX1733081)

Both are available from Demon Tweeks (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/) if the above link doesnt work. :)

Its quite possibly the printed circuit board thats at fault, had exactly the same problem ith my MK2. I seem to remember it being a fair bit for a new part, just remove the bulb if it is really bothering you!!!
