Hi all
Got a problem with my mk2 8v gti, It either idles stationary at 2000rpm or hunts between 1000rpm and 2000rpm  I replaced the idle control valve and cleaned out the throttle body which made no difference. If i pull the hose that goes to the black pcv breather thing in the rocker cover out of the throttle body the revs drop right down. If i block the hole in the throttle body, revs rise upto 2000rpm again and drop when i unblock the hole. As soon as i reconect the pcv the revs slowly rise back upto 2000rpm. What are we thinking, dodgy pcv breather valve? Anyone got one spare?
cheers

Check the the bung on the rocker cover, just under the flying saucer. Also take off all the vacuum hoses and make sure they are clear. Ben

All hoses are clear and the bung is new :undecided: Going to ring gsf tomorrow and see how much a pcv valve is, got a feeling its gona be expensive

Anyone got any ideas? When i plug the metal hole in the inlet that goes to the flying sourcer the revs increase and stay at about 2500rpm, is this normal?

have you reset the base idle as per my faq?

Thats the next plan of action, i changed the cambelt today and found that the intermediate sprocket was a couple of teeth out, so i set it so that, when the camshaft and crankshaft are both pointing at there marks the rotar arm is pointing at the mark notched in the dizzy. It no longer idles at 2000rpm, now about 1000rpm but its sluggish as anything! So im going to check the ignition timing tomorrow as per your guide. Basicly my question is, does moving the intermediate sprocket a couple of teeth alter the ignition timing?
cheers

yep the intermediate shaft is linked to the rotor arm. I always ignore the marks on the int shaft sprocket they arnt important. its the location of the rotor arm that matters!
