Title: DIY Starter motor refurb trouble
Post by: Ben Lessani on 11 December 2008, 22:18
Hello,

So, in my fixing my car woes, I've replaced the metal pipe and the radiator (hopefully nothing else!).

The starter has been causing me bother and just had no power today, its just goes grrruuuuunnnnnn and turns slow. The solenoid is new and works fine - but the starter is dead.

So I pulled it off and set about dismantlning it, cleaned the copper contacts and rebuilt it - however, there is a lot of slack in the shaft at the pinion end. I can't understand how the sprung pinion section is meant to attach to the housing - it just appears to loosely sit on the end held in only by the solenoid lever?

I checked the Haynes 3 times and I'm not missing any parts, I can't understand what's going on.

Hellllpppp!!!

Well, incase anyone searches - its designed to be loose at one end. Its the bell housing that actually positions it.

On any note, mine was still boned, so got a new one from http://www.directautoelectrical.co.uk/ for £40 - not bad at all!
