Just thought I'd start this post so you can keep us all updated on how the conversion is going and it performs.... it's being done at designadubs right?
Any news, pics of progress yet?
-
I think the whole site is wanting to know! Maybe even dizzie, you see his post earlier complaning!! Blimey, think he is a tad pissed off!
I would be having to drive a micra!!! :P
-
I don't know if this is a step up or down, but mum is off to london to be with my sister who's in hospital so I'm now in a 1.1 Fiesta LX that costs ?5 a day to borrow from work.
The Golf is once again scheduled to be collected on friday the 18th. They're going to do their best to make this deadline, only time will tell now.
Meanwhile my tax disc is still lost in the post so off to the local DVLA office to get another on monday morning. ?7! paper must be going up like petrol ;)
Loads of pics will be posted as soon as some get taken. Meanwhile I'm building new door pods. ;D (see thread in audio section)
-
Dizzie is the conversion being done at designadubs? I'm interested in this conversion, what engine is being used i.e. Golf 4 150bhp, 180bhp or Audi TT 225bhp (i think), also I assume they get hold of the engine from crashed cars?
What happens with the catalytic converter, as the engine is post cat standards, but the car the engine is going into is pre cat standards?
Do they use the 20vt gearbox, and do you need to have any mods done to the transmission to get the extra power down?
And does the 20vt engine fit straight in, or do the engine mounts need modification?
-
/me takes deep breath
right. Designa Dubs are doing the conversion.
I wouldn't bother with the golf's engines tbh. The conversion at DD will cost ?4250+VAT (?4999). A lot of money you'll be paying for 30bhp odd increase. One of the earlier 20vT heads actually had larger valves than the rest. I can't remember which one though. AGU? the 150bhp 20v's also have weaker internals than the others. the 225 has a slightly lower CR of 8:1 compared to 8.5:1 with all the rest. I also heard somewhere that the VVT heads only give a 2-3% increase in power.
My engine is from a Audi TT. It's the 180bhp version as the 225's are less easy to find. I could of waited for a 225bhp version, but after talking with Prash Reedy about his 180bhp TT lump that's running 270bhp I was happy with my choice. My engine actually came from REVO, but most come from insurrance write offs. DD don't use engines with less than 10k on the clock or more than 15k. So the quality 'should' still be there, although already run in.
The cat took it's rightfull home in the skip ;D The MOT rules go on the year of the car. 1987 then :D Which is sweet cos without it it unlocks a fair few Gee Gee's. i've been told after removing the cat and a few other bits and bobs the 180 engine can easily be running 225/230bhp. Plenty to start with ;) Also adds ammo to the "why didn't you buy a new car" arguement.
I'm using a mk4 20vT 'box as the TT one is 4wd. This has a Hydraulic clutch and is cable change so modifications have to be made to the pedals and shifter. I'll probably hate the clutch now as I loved mine being right at the top of the pedal travel. I think the trottle is now running drive-by-wire aswell.
Does it fit straight in? yes and no. From what I've read on the interweb 2 of the 3 mounts bolts straight in. the other has to be removed from the old mk2 engine. not a problem.
the management I'm running is the 'standard' VAG one using all 16 sensors. When I first contacted them Paul (who's now left DD) told me the Motec standalone management only uses 8 seonsors and VAG had spent A LOT of $$ (or should I say DM) getting this right. I think everyone will agree the 20vT is one fine motor in terms of tuning. Unfortunally for thieves (and us) they also incorperated the imobiliser circuit into practically everything. The clocks, the key, the ecu. Aparently REVO have just finished some code to remove that ECU part. Basically the whole management loom has to be installed. Cos I had the older K-jet 8v there wasn't much to take out. Snowball has S3 clocks in his mk3 dash so I'm hoping mounting the TT ones shouldn't pose too much hard work.
A custom downpipe has to be fabricated to join the TT's manifold to the mk2's exhaust. Powerflow are making mine. That just means you can run any mk2 exhaust from the downpipe back. Once I've got some more pennies I'll get powerflow to make up a whole system.
ok
the above is only what I've been told / heard from other people. It could be (and probably is) BS. ;D
anything else?
-
did you consider any other engine conversion dizzie? ???
-
Sounds good Dizzie. Have powerflow actually started making your exhaust? If not you might want to consider these guys......Tony Law exhausts, sorry cant find the number or even http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk
top companies. Have a chat you might be surprised.
BTW still want them alloys as someone is after them?
Solo
-
and one more question :D.......
did you put in the mk4 dash to make it more compatible with the engine?
any one got the new pvw mag?
TT dashes in dubs look cool man 8)
-
other engines? I've wanted a turbo for ages and the 20v seemed like the best plan. I like the sound the VR6 makes, but I've heard it's a fairly heavy engine and it would be better to put the 4 pot in instead.
I put a mk3 dash in. The only part you need to be more compatible is the clocks and I think these can be mounted in easy enough.
I have the new PVW mag. Every other car has a Tt dash. Personally I don't think the TT dash in a mk2 and the mk3 looks at home. Plus finding a complete TT dash for less than ?500 is tricky. my mk3 one only cost me ?35.
-
Hi Dizzie
Had my mk2 back no for about 3 months! I had the same engine as you are havin fitted (180 bhp 20v t).
Its really good fun and beleave me mate its worth the wait! ;D
Which intercooler are you using because i had one made up by radtec!
Im havin and exhaust made by powerflow an its been fitted on wednesday and its been re-mapped!
Hope u have plenty of spare cash to get used to the cahnge in power cause i manage to go through my 1st set of tryres in about 1500 miles but its well worth the fun u'll have!
All the best
Mick ; :)
-
I got a set of A539's for peanuts 2 months ago so they're sat in the garage waiting to go on when the toyos become bald.
I dunno what intercooler they're using. I'll ask when I call on wednesday.
-
have u upgraded the brakes! got some 4 pots to put on mine when i get some new wheels! how do you find the ride on 17's! as im running 15's at the moment but think i will need to go to 16's or 1's to get the brakes under them???
Micck
-
I've got a G60 setup from a corrado on the front. I have to run at least 15's to clear them. no biggy though.
UPDATE:
called them today... the engine is IN the bay! yay
Picking up friday hopefully.
-
is that 5 weeks total ? Don't give them a tip, if it comes to ?4494.99 ask for the penny change. It's not even my car and im p1ssed off at them ! lol *grumbles like an old man*
And just remember mate, 3k rpm max. till the temp. hits 90, and 60 seconds on tickover before switching off ;)
Chris.
-
heh. a mate's dad bought a pajero not so long ago and his insurrance took off his turbo timer when they installed an alarm so I'm getting it for cheap.
not sure that my alarm is going to do though. it auto-imobilises after 30 seconds.
we'll see. I'll go steady after shatting myself on the first 'boot' ;D
-
we'll see. I'll go steady after shatting myself on the first 'boot'
LOL, you'll be soo tempted to hammer it every were, enjoy
-
hey dizz ;)
are you putting power steering on it as well? ???
-
sounds good :D
-
yeah '6. I figured there's a PAS pump already on the engine I'd ask if they could so they did. Free of charge too which was nice of them.
They uprated all the suspension to 16v too to help with the slight increase in weight. hopefully it won't feel any harsher than it was. G60 brakes on the front too which I mentioned earlier.
They're replaced the following too as it was getting a bit worn:
Passanger side Wish bone heavily rusted. ( ?30 +VAT Suplied and fitted)
Bushes in Drivers side wish bone need replacing ( Quicker and cheaper to replace whole wishbone for a new one with bushes( ?30 +VAT Suplied and fitted))
All 3 engine mounts (They're ok for now, but may need changing with the extra power from the 1.8T ?30+VAT for the front, ?20+VAT for Gearbox rear and ?40 +VAT for engine rear.)
ARB bushes on Wishbones (both sides) Heavily warn. (?20+VAT suply and fit both sides)
and Top suspension mounts as mentions earlier. (?15 +VAT a side supply and fit)
all apart from the engine mounts I did. I only just replaced them!
They're putitng TT clocks in, but not mounting them. I have to do that myself. they wouldn't cut up my dash even though I said they could.
-
Can i have a go in it? :D :-*
-
*forms an ordily queue behind '6 to wait for a go aswell* ;)
-
ladies first :P
-
To crash it :P :P
*coughs and makes a bolt for the door*
-
ahem!!! ive been driving for 6 years and never had an accident where i was at fault hence i now have the letters GTI after my name :P
-
:P, point, only one year for me and the crash wasn't my fault either!!
And that was coming from a man who reversed into a lamp post on the college car park the other day :-[ :-[ :-[
And a wheely bin :-[ :-[ :-[
*makes the bolt for the door again, just in embarrased this time
-
i hit an asda trolley today - i guess it happens to the best of us :-[
-
i was driving a double decker bus one day (long story) and a guy pulled out in front of it. his excuse "sorry i didn't see you"
very. very worrying
-
I had a tranny van do the same to me the other day, luckily my brakes work :o :o and i gave him a fistful of horn and the finger
Do you find you reverse, but just reverse and not look were you are going? Especially in the morning
-
stop hijacking my thread >:( ;)
-
should we just hijack ur car instaed ;D
if ur head gets any bigger hun u wont ever be able to fit lambo doors :P
-
I don't want them!
take my car. I know you won't get far ;D
-
your a lucky basted dizzie!
for 4k did you consider a diffrent golf?
or did you always have your heart set on the conversion?
pity i live so far away,id love a demo! ;)
-
what's the point in buying another golf? I wouldn't love it. It wouldn't be the car that I made like this. This is the car I want to drive. :)
sure I could of bought a new one, but there aren't many new cars out there that weigh less than a ton and there defiently aren't any that look as good as a mk2 golf (my opinion) ;D
-
Hope u def get it this fri!!
Not long now!! Will be so cool :D
-
cool 8)
man, im forever lost with what to do next!
would it be mad to spunk 4/5k into my lovely mk2?
or should i take that 4/5 k and my a g60 that would hold its value alot better, ???
thats what im considering at the moment :)
-
g60!! Thats wat I'd go for but if u do wat Dizzie doing then u have an origonal car that u done by yourself!!
Did I mention how wonderful Dizzie is :D
-
marcus -- in my opinion dizzies is the best mark 2 ive ever seen. i dont think u can really appreciate it til u see it in real life but it really doesnt look like 'just' a mark2.
ive put pics of my car on the web with dizzies car behind and people always ask without fail about the car in the background it is an absolute head turner.
the interior doesnt let down the exterior either. dizzie really has paid attention to detail and done most of the work himself. i think u would be hard pushed to find a g60 as nice as this.
realistically, i dont think we will ever see dizzie sell this car and thats why the engine upgrade was obviously a good move for him. The car was never slow in the first place, but obviously having put so much work into it, selling it would imo been a silly move but i guess we ar all power hungry at the end of the day.
im not trying to big up dizzie at all, but ive seen a few cars over the last few months at meets and this is the only one thats really made my jaw drop.
it has definate show potential and i think dizzie knows this, if ur thinking of doing the same marcus make sure u have the right car in the first place. thers not many like this one ;)
-
cheers vix, ;)
my car golf is a real minter, so definatley the right platform for a conversion.
my only concern is selling it on,
but then i guess if you have invested as much time as dizzie has on his, you would never want to let it go. ;)
nowadays there is no way i would convert my rhd golf to a g60 engine cos it would no way keep its value,
but a 1.8t conversion is a diffrent story.
anyways,
im gonna save up some cash and c what i can do with it
can twait to see the car dizzie,
like ive sed to you before dude, on the pics it looks mint
are you goin to the santa pod meet?
ill have a good butchers then if you are ;) :D
-
You need to check out luke's mk2 then!! Same colour nearly as Dizzies wi g60 arches rallye front immaculate!!
But Dizzie really has the best car and he's such a wonderful gud looking boy aswell :)
-
elctric recaros and mark 3 dash too?? :)
-
Nearly recaros but no mk3 dash as he wants it origonal was thinking corrado but wants to keep it they way it is.
And its not a mk1 so room for improvement ha ha :D
-
firstly. thanks Vix :)
the trouble with a G60 is they're almost all LHD so you have to stick out 4ft to see if it's safe to overtake. :(
don't get me wrong. I think the G60 is a great engine, but in terms of reliabilty and tuning potential the 20vT wins. Unless you've either paid to have it serviced or have proof it's been serviced expect another ?xxx on top to have that done.
everything else a G60 has mine does too. electric recaros, heated electric mirrors, G60 running gear, G60 280mm front brake setup with MC.
rallye headlights? If you pay ?500 for them you must be mad. personally I like the crystal ones which is why I went that route. After seeing fielders with a jetta front I'm tempted to try one of those to see what that looks like, but I can't justify spending ?500. also I thought the rallye lights setup was a bit pants in the actual lighting dept ???
my interior is almost done. Just need to install the mk4 cab dash and get that in there right. then swap over the door cards to the mint ones I've got in my garage and build my other speaker pod and get that on. After I got my seats shampoo'd they look brand new.
I have no intention of selling the car. I can't see the point in spending time and money on a car and then selling it on.
Did I mention how wonderful Dizzie is :D
nice try Sarah.
Future plans:
G60 arches, 90 spec skirts, -80mm lowering springs, small ICE install of a 10" sub, maybe some alloy tanks under the bonnet.
not much to go now. ;D
I'll try my best to get to the next meet where ever it might be.
-
Rallye lighting is pants but it looks the dogs and I loved it so why not splash the cash for it ???
Please Dizzie dont do the Jetta front!!!!
I may have some cheapo g60 arches u can have em if I can get ma hands on them :)
-
unless they're mint and genuine i'm not interested. in my experience non-genuine parts don't fit worth a sh!t.
that lad you were with at newark said there was a non-genunie wing on the mk2 with the rallye front and it bent all the grill up cos it didn't fit right ???
-
i forgot to mention earlier - to own such a perfect car u have to b completely obsessed.
his seats do not look dirty, his doorcards look immaculate, the dash is absolutely outstanding but is dizzie happy??? no way!
and i hate square lights :-[ e xcept on the rallye that is :D
-
unless they're mint and genuine i'm not interested. in my experience non-genuine parts don't fit worth a sh!t.
that lad you were with at newark said there was a non-genunie wing on the mk2 with the rallye front and it bent all the grill up cos it didn't fit right ???
they are origonal parts
guy I was at newark with (ex) put rallye front on and its bent and its all the wings fault ::)
Anyways not my car anymore :'(
-
thanks for all the info dizzie, seriously got me thinking now, ???
how did you save all that cash, u win the lotto or summat? ??? :D
-
na, got a loan ;D
-
yeh :D
the quick and easy way to deal with all your dub needs! :D
ive got to save tho :-\
you putting a dump valver on her?
what kind of power do you want her to produce so she will be quick and reliable?
surely mad modifications would meen forfitting reliability ???
well it would have in my old 2.0 20v turbo,
but these vag engines are bullet proof rite?
-
Sweeet stuff Diz, wish I had the wonga to do the same :-*
-
hey, i like to think that i helped pay for that new engine, in some small way atleast ;) :D
- i have a phat install that dont fit in my car ::)
-
it'll be putting out 230bhp and should be fairly reliable. I'm not anticipating any major break downs in the next few years.
I have to use a recirculating dump valve cos I'm using standard VAG management. if I wanted an atmospheric dump valve I'd have to use standalone and I've heard that isn't as good. I dunno. I'll just be happy to get it back.
vix, I'll sort your problem out soon.
-
Vix is it the neon furry dice??
-
vix, I'll sort your probably out soon.
u'll do what :o
i think u will have to anticipate some problems dizzie with the new engine. u cant do something that drastic and expect it to b reliable anymore surely :-\
on the fluffy dice front, im looking out for some yellow and black ones, my black and white ones just dont go with the styling anymore :(
-
Oh no!!
I'll keep an eye out for some blak and yellow ones
Did rich give u the fuel cap from that car yet?
-
it's only been mildly tuned though. removing the cat isn't really going to cause me any problems, but it does unlock some bhp. them putting on a decent air intake and small management tweaks. Probably less tuned than having it "revo'd"
-
vix, I'll sort your probably out soon.
i think u will have to anticipate some problems dizzie with the new engine. u cant do something that drastic and expect it to b reliable anymore surely :-\
y not?
if the job is doen properly then it should be fine?
surely? ???
-
ahhh,
cant wait to see this beast in action ;)
4k all in then?
engine and everything?
what a quality price!
midland vw based in warwickshire broke down engine conversions down to me like this, engine and everything up rated accordingly:
g60 conversion 2k
vr6 conversion 3k
1.8t conversion 4k
its gonna be one of those or im jus gonna buy a g60 straight off :D
-
i just think its gonna take a while to get it all running as well as it can. it wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if the cars back at designa dubs within the next 3 months being more finely tuned. im not saying DD are gonna do a sh!t job just that its complicated and problems are imo to be expected.
no fuel cap yet sarah, ill hassle rich ;) :D
-
midland VW quoted me ?3500 when I was getting my quotes ages ago.
The car proabably will be returning to DD in a couple of months. that's the norm with new engine just to check over how they're running, etc.
-
::)
even better than 1st thought then! :D
-
they use Motec management though. DD said that the VAG management was a lot better as it used 16 sensors compared to the 8 motec use so engine failure was more prone.
it's swings and f'ing roundabouts I think.
-
dizz,
how come you still went for DD when midland vw were offering it to ya for a cheaper price? ???
quality of the job, were they offering more value for money?
-
after talking on the phone a few times DD filled me with more confidence. they sounded like they knew what they were talking about more than midland vw. I also got a load of little things extra from DD. like the power steering and putting the G60 brakes on and setting all that up right. DD also quoted me 2 weeks in the beginning ::) so I went with them.
I'm just happy it should be back on my drive on friday :)
-
i bet you will ;)
-
Just read up on all the posts. Brilliant thread and it's really nice to see someone ploughing hard earned into thier MKII.
I too have a MKII which is why i'm sitting here reading/posting funnily enough! :)
Mines the same colour as yours Dizzie. Its a 1990 GTI 8valve. Soon to be a 16Valve (heavily modified) or 20VT. Undecided yet as to what to do.
I have a friend who's spent silly amounts of money on his OE engine, a 16Valve. The last time he had it rolling roaded it was 170bhp @ the wheels. When he took me out I was gob smacked and scared I guess.
I've owned a good few performance cars so do know what "fast" is. One car I bought had 321 Hp (BMW M3 Evo), the others about 240 hp mark and this Golf just seemed to be faster. Its mad I can't explain it. He's spent ????'s on this car and it shows. It's got Carbs the size of small Pizza's, paintwork like glass and thinking about it gives me goosebumps lol! :o
What really made me think it was quick was where we launched and I do mean launched down a section of road and when selecting 2nd gear all I could hear was wheelspin and revlimiter (obviously no good when you're trying to go fast lol). He's got a Quaif Diff in it so both wheels were screaming as we shot down the road, getting to 100mph in what seemed like a blink. It inspired me to have an engine put into my car. 8)
My last car was a Subaru and well the Golf just doesn't compare whilst driving. Asthetically yes it does, I love the shape of a MKII Golf, always have done. I've only had the car about 2 months, I was getting bored of it (i'm that type where I get bored of something quickly) but then stumbled on this thread and thought "stick with it". ;D
My car needs some arch work at the moment (no writing left on the rear tyres) as its scrubbing the tyres like mad. 9J X 16 Brock B2's are on the car. I need to get the arches sorted (G60+rolled/cut/flattened) asap before I have a blow out.
I'm dying to see some pictures of the car, will go have a nose about on here now to see if I can find some!
Cheers! :)
-
quick point, i know you were after a blow off type dump valve Diz (no dirty jokes please) but there's a way round it. Get the silencer hacked off the turbo (if it has one) .. de-cat.. fit silicon hoses and a true CAI, you'll be surprised just how much noise a recirc. forge 007 can make when dumping ;)
Chris.
-
yeh check dizzies car out in the gallery, looks real nice :)
i know what your saying about getting bored quickly, in the last year ive gad like 5cars!!!
pug106 xsi,
pug 206 gti
fiat coupe 20v turbo... sweeeet 8)
mk2 gti 8valve
m2 gti 16 valve
the coupe was very nice, but since having my golf i have been totally in love with em!
this one is a brilliant, fascinating to know whats goin on with dizzies car, its something id be interested in doin my self!
your mate must have spent a sh!t load to get his golf to 170 bhp!
i kno someone that has spent 35k on there mk2 16 valver, thats at about 195 bhp totally at the limit!
nothing quite satisfies like a mk2 golf IMO :)
-
top, they said something about removing that silencer. is that the one right at the back of the engine in the middle? It's already been de-cat'd with samco hoses. What's a CAI?
I might look into getting a forge DV as I think the one on there is plastic :( gotta put some bling in there ;D
-
The silencer just looks like a widened bit of pipe full of baffles between the turbo and manifold, mine whistles like a banshee without it ;) True CAI is a cold air intake which feeds from ducting out to the front of the car, rather than just a big cone filter wedged onto the MAF housing. Forge dump valves are the b*llocks, highly recommend it.
Chris.
-
yeah they're removing that I think. I'll have to save my pennies to buy a forge one then. any idea of cost?
-
80 - 90 quid all in. A man of your calibre can fit it in no more than 20 mins.
-
well I'll add one of those to my list of future buys. I need to let my bank balance recover first. :)
still trying to get hold of DD to confirm collection tomorrow.
-
So Dizzie is it gonna be a sleepless night being soo excited at picking the car up tomorrow :D
-
I still don't know for defeient that I am collecting it tomorrow. I've been calling them all day without an answer. I'll give them a bell tomorrow and post the outcome :)
-
Good luck mate, come and take the alloys as the other bloke has not got back to me just so i can get a free ride in your motor lmao.
-
I'll be collecting it tomorrow now! Need to organise to get off work 2 hours early though.
They found some wiring problems with my fuel pump that needed attention. I did have some problems with it blowing relays about 18 months ago, but I changed the fusebox and put a brand new relay in there and it hasn't happened again.
so they said it's all working and all running sweet as now :)
In the time it's taking me to write this. I've organised work and dad's giving me a lift down there tomorrow ;D
It's it great when a plan finally comes together
-
you lucky basted! :D
good on ya!
just out of interest was it a hard taking your fuse box out mate? ???
my leccy windows arnt workin and i got a sneaky supiscion that it is cos myu fuse box has been wired up bu a monkey in the past! :D
-
the windows wires sit on the top of the fuse box don't they? a relay and a fuse? mine were added on so that's where they live. to remove your fuse box remove that white clip on the side(s) and lift out. then all the plugs on the back will have to be undone if you want to remove it completely. don't worry about remembering where they all go. they'll only go back in 1 way. :)
Not sure if taking my dad to DD is a good thing. he's been almost as wound up as me about it ???
-
cheers dizzie ;)
ill give it a go this wknd! :D
-
any chance you could also reduce the size of your sig pic at the same time ;)
-
would be great if i knew how? ???
-
try http://www.dizzie.biz/misc/g60_4.jpg
-
Nice one Dizzie.........just swapped it over for Marcus ;)
-
cheers guys! ;)
so helpfull! ;)
-
tomorrows plan:
work until 1
get lift with dad to DD
collect car
begin grinning ;D
collect Richandhazel (well, just Rich)
goto Prash's to deliever mk4 cab clocks
it's all good.
-
u forgot to say : deliver TT golf to vickys house ;) :D
-
yup, I did forget to mention that... :-*
-
So come on Dizzie tell us all about your new improved Golf!!!
-
it's like a balistic missile!
-
Is it still front wheel drive?
any traction control?
-
yeah still FWD. No TC, but for some reason it doesn't spin in the dry. Just the revs hit 7k instantly and the speedo jumps to 30mph. 3rd gear is just pure evil.
the mk4 might have a better diff than the mk2 ???
-
Some pics please, dizzie. ::)
-
click me (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=10252) ;)
-
Cheers tophuh.
Unlucky, pic doesn't upload. Seeing a tiny box with red cross in the middle. Will check it out when I get home.
Btw I'm a big fan of your sig pic. esp.the dancing spiderman. Makes me smile each time I see it. ;D
-
sorry to change the subject , but how do you pronounce your name miacant....any way, back to dizzie, wicked car man,and all the girls offering ting an ting,an hinting to there availabity...ie was with my ...ex at weekend..... :P
-
errr what pc16v? Don't think the missus would be very happy.
-
sorry to change the subject , but how do you pronounce your name miacant....
like you do Mark Hunt. ;D
