Title: Suspension on a budget.
Post by: Rodriguez on 09 December 2008, 15:46
Can anyone suggest an improved sespension setup on the cheap?  I've seen some springs and shocks from volksbits costing pennies, but am a little sceptical about those.  Would love a koni/eibach combo but money is not going to stretch that far.

I don't want it any lower than 40 and I'd be up for changing top mounts/bushes etc.

yes, if you're going to do anything cheap on a car it should definitely be suspension. or tyres.

hottuning coilovers are crap.   new standard suspention performs better all they do is allow you to smash your sump off on speedbumps.

for handeling -30 or -40mm  is optimal depending on model.   so if you want handeling it'll stay there.  spring and strut kits do a hell of a lot better job and outlast cheep coilovers

Boge turbo shocks are approx £100 for the set from GSF. Top mounts and bump stops are another £50 or so i think, and boge springs are around another £50 from gsf, or you can look out for some 2nd hand Eibach springs for around the same price.

Depends, you into looks or go-go?

If you want your car scrubbing the deck, then it wont handle full stop anyway, so get the hottuning coilies. If you want actual handling, track work or fast road driving, go for a decent shock and spring combo at 30mm, just dont expect it to look much different to standard.

Oh, hottuning coilies shook my bones to the very core!

only if you are stupid enough to lower the car TOO far !!!!!!

most sensable people will not lower the car that far !!!

coilovers are harsh because they are race bred

Stay away from cheap coilovers as mentioned.

Harsh ride. not kidding.

40mm drop on shocks and springs is the way

I've got cheap'ish coilys and the ride is harsh - but I like it, makes me feel like I am going faster than I actually am ;)

Keep an eye open on German eBay, I missed an auction on a second hand set of Var 2's with 5k on them, which went for ~ £100.

Oh I can't afford something as trivial as tyres.  Besides, I reckon the canvas gives better grip in the snow.

Merry Christmas.

I have Jamex on mine, but not happy with them. They have a 40mm drop which TBH, is a pain in the arse despite making the car look quite good. Mine were about 100 sterling all in and am now gonna change them for something better with a more appropriate ride height.

I think I'll give cheap coilovers a miss.  I aint after a race setup, just slightly better cornering and a small drop cos 8 valves ride too high.

Boge Turbos and Eibachs. Or a set of genuine 16V springs, not a big drop on an 8V but a good compromise between ride and handling. Rumour has it G60 springs (if still available) are a bit lower and harder but they'll be at least as expensive as the Eibachs. And if you are after sharper cornering without messing the ride keep a look out for a set of uprated anti-roll bars.

If your looking at £250 for the Boge/Eibach set up then just how good can £160 coilovers be? And beware of any claims of motorsport excellence from any coilovers that are less than £400-500 a corner. You get what you pay for.
