Title: rear wheel bearing change
Post by: paultownsend on 09 December 2008, 01:06
iv always given a new disk and bearing combo to a garage to sort out before. but as i made the mistake of getting non-genuine bearings, the rear left needs replacing after 4000 miles. all greased and torqued corectly.

is this a job that can be done on my bench? or is a press neeeded?

rear bearings are pretty easy to diy, tap out old races and tap in newuns with a suitable drift.  The old knackered race makes a perfect drift for the job :)

Can be done with a hammer and socket if you're careful enough. Just take your time and keep checking they're going in straight.

Rear bearings shouldn't be torqued, thats what went wrong.

Yeah, rear bearings are a doddle, tap out the old'uns and tap in the new ones. The nut only goes on hand tight - which is pretty scary considering thats all that holds the wheel on!

you should tighten them down while spinning the disc/drum to settle the bearings, then loosen angain and set it so the flat washer is movable with a screwdriver, then fit the lock washer & pin then the dust cap.  All in the haynes/bentley.

Never torque a taper bearing as you will crush it, only needs to be hand tight as the split pin holds it.

you need to tighten it past hand tight whilst spinning the disc/drum at first to settle the bearing then back off and set hand tight.  By past hand tight, I dont mean lean on it with a breaker bar, just enough for the nut to become tight.  If you want an exact figure its given in the bentley:
