Title: Mk2 Front Anti Roll Bar
Post by: Skid on 08 December 2008, 13:55
Hi Guys,

A quick question re front anto roll bars. My 1992 8v run out model is soon to have all new standard anti roll bar bushes and wondered if the 16v arb was different and a worth while upgrade? My model has many 16v trim and accessories and wondered if hte arb would have been the same as well?

The car isn't hard core and I've no desire to go that route, it's just while I'm doing the bushes is there a worth while modest upgrade.

I'm interested in your feedback.

Cheers
Mark

all 1.8 mk2s have an 18mm bar as std, except the G60/Rallye which has a 23mm bar :)
maybe the 1.6 diesel models had the 18mm front arb too, not sure.

I've heard elsewhere the diesels have ARB's but the 1.3, 1.6 and maybe the 1.8 petrol non GTi's don't have them? Is that true?

hmmm... Would it be worth/possible to put a ARB on a 1.6? Just wondering because I do a lot of B road mileage, and it would be safer to have one if possible, wouldn't it?

possible yes, but worth it? thats up to you./  Mattneck had one fitted to his 1.3, but he got it done by a garage.  Trouble is you have to drop the subframe to get it in, whilst supporting the engine.

i only got the garage to do it because i work for them thus it was free

JAy - id recommend it without a doubt.. it transformed mine and made it feel a huge amount more stable just driving sensibly.

I grabbed an ARB off a 5 door golf, (for my 1.6 Ryder) and it was 21.5mm in diam, can't remember if it was off a GL or GTI though.

I would have prefered the 18mm one, as I wouldn't have had to faff about with making my poly bush holes bigger to fit on the ARB.  But it makes a hell of a diference for cornering.

I know the 21.5mm have been shuffled across from Mk3s, but according to a front anti roll bar allocation table in ElsaWin it's only listed for Golf/Vento Estate Syncro

I'll ask around the local garages and see how much it costs

If it's cheap enough I'll have an ARB off yourself

personally if i was going to all the effort of fitting an arb, it would be a size larger than the 18mm oem jobber!

The very late Drivers have a 18mm front bar but none on the rear. If you decide to go thicker than that up front you'll need to fit a rear bar - either aftermarket or a GTi beam - otherwise the handling could get a bit odd. I fitted a GTi beam and an Eibach kit and very nice it is too
