Title: Snow and Ice
Post by: Egbutt Wash on 04 December 2008, 14:50
I'm impressed with the GTI on snow.
For a fat tyred car with no LSD the electronics make it very easy to drive.
The DSG works a treat on the snow.

It really is a great allrounder.

Last year I managed to get mine home in quite deep snow, over some decent hills too as I live in the stix. DSG in manual and TC very much off and away I went!

My BMW E30 325 with an LSD is not so controllable but an awful lot of fun....

It does mean that you can climb hills etc with ease. But it certainly does not help you stop!! Think thats where most of the 4x4's go wrong.

The DSG works a treat on the snow.

mmm ... don't think I agree with you there

Stopping on a downhill icy slope with DSG is not half as easy as in a manual .... my ABS was constantly cutting in this morning....had to stick the car in neutral once or twice to stop it

What do other DSG owners think ?

Didn't have a probelm with DSG in the snow, just did a manual gear change and switched off the ESP  Just a shame it took 3 Hrs to get to work rather thean the usual 40-45 mins  (That was due to traffic, snow, accidents and not my driving!! )

I read here that you should never stick the DSG into neutral whilst the car is moving. Not technically minded I didn't really understand the finer points but the general consensus was it was not good for the gearbox. Have not had any snow down here is the south east so no opportunity to test it out.

As an automatic driver from way back I use N on tricky down hill bits.  Never mind the gearbox, it's your life that counts.

Yeah, welcome back.  Looking forward to more bizzare, random and sometimes downright annoying posts.       But I think every forum should have an Egbert Nosh.
