Title: noise like a rough bearing when clutch pedal is pressed HALF way down...
Post by: Donuts on 03 December 2008, 21:42
Hi.

I replaced the release bearing but that made no difference. When I press the clutch pedal when changing gear, I hear a rough noise when its about half way down. Then it disappears. After a gear is selected, when the pedal is being released, this rough noise (like a rough bearing) reappears when the pedal is about half way through its travel back to its resting point.
This only happens when selecting gears - when presiing the pedal in and out in neutral there is no noise.
I have spent ages searching for the answer on this forum. I hope someone can offer some advice.
Thanks

id say try toping up your gearbox oil.

ive just had the clutch done in mine (with new release bearing), and at idle with no pressure on the clutch pedal i get the noise you're referring to. this disappears when i press the clutch pedal down. according to the 'mechanics' at work, this could be a bearing on the other side of the gearbox, forget what its called... but its a box off job.

well if if is a bearing I will just drive it until it breaks!
 Thank you

Could be the central bit on the release plate that the rod contacts as you press the clutch pedal, this would require box off and new clutch though.

chris yeah I'd agree your issue is probably a bearing inside the box, when in neutral the box input shaft is still spinning and stops when you press the clutch pedal.
The release bearing is still spinning at least a bit when pedal pressed as its in contact with the pushrod, which is also in contact with the release plate, which spins at all times as its attached to the pressure plate which is bolted to the engine crank :)

sounds like a "wait until the box blows up" job then

aye, it probably wont get any worse for a long time, as long as you keep the oil topped up.  my old 1.6 driver had the same problem
