Title: newbie with a question ! Golf sluggish!?

Hi just bought myself a mk3 golf gti 8v today off ebay :P

Thing is when I put my foot down and accelerate , it feels kinda sluggish and spluttery!? But when maintainning speed its super quiet, but as soon as I put foot down to increase speed, kinda splutters and struggles! Not ever so bad, but just dosent feel right ya know! Any suggestions?! I dont know a lot about cars :(
