Title: Low Washer Fluid - Warning Light on MK5 GTI
Post by: Boxerfrancis on 02 December 2008, 11:44
Hi Guys,

Can I pick someones brain please?

I have a 2005 Mark5 Golf GTI and I assumed it would have a low washer fluid warning light built in, the dealership says it hasnt?

Does this sound right, my Mk4 GTI TDI did have and I think the manual says this model has, I feel as though they are fobbing me off, I just cant believe it hasnt got that facility????

Be grateful of some advice please????

Jim

probably no help but mine has got it. Only midline too so I would expect the same in a GTi and defo if you have the highline.

To my knowlwedge, in fact Im pretty sure, you need to have the winter pack to have the low washer fluid level.

I have the winter pack on mine but ran out of washer fluid the other day and there was no warning so I have no idea whats going on there . . .  Im not too fussed as it only takes 30 seconds to top it up when you get home.

The low washer sign is a feature of the winter pack I'm afraid.

Hardly worth ranting about

If you don't top up your washer fluid without a light/buzzer what else don't you check on your car ?

dont trust the old highline, i had a similar issue not so long ago with the oil warning light when it was low and the light didnt come on, i check all the time anyway.

As correctly stated the low washer light is indeed part of the winter pack. However it can be programmed specificially by VagCom. So if you ask your dealer nicely the low washer light feature can be turned on on any MK5 Golf.

Oh I dont lol

Thats why I dont really care that it doesnt work as I make a decent effort to check things at like coolant (which I have a leak on :(, booked in to VW in 2 weeks to get it looked at) and oil. Dont really check the washer level but like I said, its not the end of the world if it runs out, just fill it up when I get in.

Seems abit shocking that you have to purchase the winter pack to tell you to top the washer fluid up, my v v v vauxhall warned me. Bad on VW's part I say.

Really!  I didn't know that...   My new  My wife's new R32 has the winter pack and Xenons it has the washer by default and because it has leathers, they are heated anyway so that just leaves the washer light which I can sort myself.   Thanks for that bit of info.

don't you require the sensor in the tank though like the MKIV?  surely they don't fit the sensor and not enable it  :undecided:

Will the MKVI have a warning buzzer for if your low on credit on your phone, or your near your overdraft limit? How about a warning buzzer to tell you you are the laziest car owner in the universe?

Well I had been told by someone on another forum that he had his done on his MK5 Golf. I am currently trying to locate the original source where I read it. It did indeed seem that the sensor was there already and i just had to be turned on electronically. In one way it makes sense I guess for all the cost of the sensor would likely be to simply bulk manufacture the washer tanks to all the same spec. That said I could be wrong as I have taken this guy's word for it. Maybe some of you with VagCom can have a look and see if the setting is in there.

its a bit poor if it can be switched on with vagcom, it just seems like vw conning people into buying the winter pack

it is a useful feature, was on my mini cooper before because the windscreen wash reservoir was smaller than a can of coke

I would think that if it's not already working, ie as part of the winter pack or Xenons then I very much doubt you'll have the sensor in place and thus won't be able to enable it.  Simple check is if you enable it and it immediately sounds/lights up then it isn't fitted.

Post by: synnea on 02 December 2008, 15:43
Just off the phone to a local dealer parts dept. Having checked ETKA he says the sensor is a seperate unit in the water tank so it seems what I thought may indeed be incorrect :( . The sevice guy was unavailable to tell me if all tanks come with the sensor fitted so he told me to check with the service dept. There was noone available at the time in service to see if they knew was the sensor fitted in all models.

Apologies for creating the excitment for those of you who wanted to enable it easily, as I had originally stated....seems I am wrong after all.

You'll need a wire to the dash insert if you fit the sensor.  I remember a batch of Fabia's were made without the wire in place and it caused a nightmare for the service dept's.

Or how about the easiest option of all. When you pull the stalk and no water comes out, fill it up with some more. Hey presto cleany window.

I too am very miffed that my previous MKIV,s 1.8T and PD150 had this feature yet my all singing and dancing GTI is back blah blah blah
does'nt.Now after reading this thread even more pissed off that a friendly VAGCOM guy cant activate it because wolfsburg decided to pre-empt the credit crunch by not fitting a sodding sensor therefore saving money  to offset the fact that 8 months after buying the sodding thing they reduce the cost of R32,s to £1000 pound less than I paid for my ******* GTI.Even worse Cliff is on the tele singing "mistletoe and wine"..Pass me a rope

Does no one do a weekly fluid and air check?

Every week (or two weeks if I'm doing weekend shifts), I will check oil, coolant and washer levels, and also tyre pressures. It's worth doing rather than relying on the car to tell you stuff.

i think the general consensus on this one is that people are doing this but were under the impression this came as a standard feature on the car.

To my surprise mine came on today and i never knew i had winter pack (brought one of cheap new r32s from dealers so i didnt spec it)Or did this become a standard feature from a certain build date?. Correct me if im wrong but im sure the winterpack also came with heated water spray jets for ice on windscreen and to stop them blocking/freezing up

Yes the winter pack also included the heated fan jets but IMO are pretty useless as if it's that cold and  the screen wash freezes in the tubing, you still won't get a spray.

You have too get the sensor (not expensive) an O-ring and wires, make a hole in the reservoir fore the O-ring and sensor. one wire goes to the dash panel, plug T36/34 and one to G32. then U just have to code the dash, from 3103 and to 7103

Seriously,it was standard my MKIV,I'll live without it on my GTI..It will learn me to look under the bonnet more often.
