I just got a Golf MK3, which came with a Sony headunit.
But its only a tape one, and I want to change it for a CD headunit.
Ive changed the headunits in other cars, but I cant work out how to get this headunit out at all. The black bit which surrounds the removable front seems to be attached, so I cant get that off at all.
This is the original headunit, as its says something like "Made for Volkswagen Group" on the tape deck door.
Does anyone know how to remove it?

Just rip it out. Does it matter if you damage the unit?

I guess it doesn't. But when I get rid of the car I would like to put it back.

not sure what they are like there must be somewhere to put a key in to remove it? do u have any pics u could post?

pull out your heater vents and remove the 2 screws there. then remove the 2 bits of 'trim' left and right of the headunit and remove those 2 screws. the whole vents and headunit just come out then so you can have a better look. ;D

the standard sony tape deck needs slim screwdrivers inserted at the right points to remove it.
i tried partially taking my dash apart to remove it, and cracked it.. be careful

Don't rip the dash apart or trash the unit, these are very easy to remove!!
When new, these were issued with a Sony key, which was essentially a flat bit of bar approximately 1mm thick by approximately 4mm wide.
There are two points in which to insert this bar to release the unit from the cage.
First things first, take the face plate off.
The first slot is approximately 30mm in from the left hand side of the head unit, at the top of the face (ie the underside of the surround that you can't remove).
The second slot is hard against the right hand side of the head unit roughly half way down.
If you don't have the key any thin flat bar can be used - in the past I've used spark plug gappers, hacksaw blades, the lot! Or, if you want to wait, pm me your address I'll post you one out, as long as you promise to send it back!
Have a go with something first, and if you still can't do it, let me know.

Good point JV, I should point out that all the head units I have ever removed (bar 'repossesing' one for none-payment) have been legitimate!!!
Can't stand stereo thieves (spot the man that's been a victim of them once or twice!)

I think Ive found what you mean, but am having trouble getting something which fits and works.

Do I need to insert something into both sides at once?
BTW: My headunit is a Sony XR-3759 :)

yeah, they're the holes, they're in a slightly different position to cd units, but that doesn't matter.
When you buy one of those units, you do only get one key, as they can be done one at a time - basically you you push the key in one side, shift the unit diagonally so that side pops clear of its tags, then do the other side and the whole lot will slide clear.
If you pm me your address I'll post you a key, alternatively if you're anywhere near st. neots in cambridgeshire, swing by and i'll take it out for you (the stereo, that is).

I bought some Sony Headunit keys today from Halfords. I tried what you said, but it didn't work. I also tried what the person in Halfords said, which was to insert the keys either side and lift it up slighty, but this didn't work.
I will try the garage I got the car from, they might know how to get it out.

Ive just noticed it says "...where there are two horizontal slots along the bottom of the radio". Mine are at the top, so I think they might have been the wrong ones.

Well, I got it off in the end! ;D
I ended up just taking out all the small screws on the HU its self, then I could see the two clips holding it in, which I just released. Then it slid out fine.

Sony Head Unit Removal Help - 1997 Mk III
Help !! - I'm struggling to remove the old (ancient!) Sony XR 6559 radio cassette unit from my Mk III TDi - Pioneer DEH-P4900IB with ipod control going in its place :grin:
Have made myself some flat approx 5-6mm wide removal tools , and inserted them into the slots top left hand corner and top right corner area but to no avail. Tried the tools in at various distances, up to 4 inches in and still no sign of release.
The left hand side feels loose anyway, so its just the right hand one thats stopping the removal
I was about to resort to the crowbar, but i'll try the small screws as described above, unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Well thanks to hitmanip7's suggestion of removing the front facia plate i was able to see the retaining clips - there was no way any form of tool through the front slots was going to release these - in fact they look back to front to me, such that the only way to depress them by sliding a tool over the top would be from the rear of the unit !! :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
But some good news the wiring is untouched so the normal dual iso connectors on the cable loom, and a 2 into 1 connection cable from the isos to the sony unit. Just got to pray the Pioneer is std dual isos, or the same single as the current sony :undecided:

Yeah all pioneer stuff is standard 2 plug ISO.
Just swap the Red and Yellow wires over on the new Pioneer loom which will just unplug, so instead of Red to Red, Yellow to Yellow, do Red to Yellow, Yellow to Red.
Otherside you will loose the memory on your new radio everytime you turn the ignition off.
If you have a roof arial you may also need an arial booster of the reception is poor.

new unit arived by courier at lunchtime, swapped the red and yellows over on the pioneer cable loom (simple bullet connections :smiley: ) :grin: :grin: and plugged it all in - 10 minutes tops inlcuding replacing the frame in the dashboard.
Very impressed with the DEH-P4900IB so far - better go read the manuals now :laugh: :laugh:
Will post some pics up later of before and after
Unit cost £110 from Bassjunkies, even came supplied with the optional CD-I200 ipod lead which i'll route through to the glovebox at the weekend (just stashed it under the headunit for the time being) - so full ipod charging and control from the headunit :smug:
