Got a phonecall today to say that the dash lights on my GTI were on.
So i go over to my Grans, where the car is kept. dash lights were on and so were the rear number plate lights.
i havent touched the car since saturday when i changed stalks and took the oil filter housing off, and the lights werent on when i left saturday.
i took the fuse out for the rear number plate lights, but when i took the headlight switch out the dash lights stayed on....surely the dash lights should go out when i remove the switch?
so ive disconnected the battery for now.
anybody got any ideas?
Car is an 87 gti 16v with a 2.0 16v engine

I might do soon!
in the 3 weeks ive had it, the oil pressure light on the dash came on, thread for the pressure switch came out of the oil filter housing when i removed the switch, the headlight sitch dimmer thing melted, the splines on one of the wipers stripped off, the wipers wouldnt turn off, bonnet catch broke!!
has been fine all the time my mate had it!

think you need to check the headlight switch wires all the way back to the fusebox

thanks, i will have a look on saturday

sounds like quite a serious wireing problem maybe or just that some nut in the past that has no idea about cars has messed about with the wiring for your sake i hope not, good luck
-
been having a look today, took the switch/clocks surrond out and i can see the problem straight away
a couple of the wires from the headlight switch and in the loom under the dash have melted together.
also i noticed a few drips of water on the fusebox, so going to have to check for leaks under the dash

glad your getting sorted

looking at the size of the puddle in your signature i'm not suprised you have water in the car if you drove through it

Its not a first... I once returned home to see my neighbour's SEAT-people-carrier-thing in exactly the same situation as yours: dash lights and rear number plate lights on. Glad to hear you've found the problem tho...

Has your car got 2 doors, or 4 doors? Something not quite right there dude

Well spotted and I see what you mean. Short doors on a two door? :undecided:
-
it looks like the rear door handles have been shaved off
right click on the image and click view image , this will give you a bigger picture :smug: :smug: :smug:

Well observed lol, its a 5dr with the rear door handles shaved off - as well as the aerial and spare wiper holes. It properly confused me when I saw it in the advert pics before going to buy it...
The front seats tilt up cos they're from a Corrado, but I find it easier to reach back and open the rear doors from the inside to let people in. Confuses the hell out of drunks...
I just dread the day that someone accidentally flicks the child safety lock switch... they'll be shut forever then :undecided:

Check the grommet where the bonnet cable goes through the bulkhead is fitted correctly and isnt damaged as this will cause water leaks onto the fusebox
