Hi everyone, could you tell me what you have done/would advise in terms of suspension upgrades?
I want to keep the car as original as possible. So would only want a small drop if absolutely necessary. Should I also change the bushes to upgraded ones?
Had an 8v a long time ago and made a mistake in getting some rather harsh shocks and springs and it spoilt the car for day to day driving so want to keep it comfortable.
Would it be better to just replace like for like?
I would welcome you thoughts and inspiration!
Thanks
Stuart

-40mm springs on fresh standard gas dampers and new standard bushes and mounts all round.
This will probably give you the best ride/handling compromise, if comfort is a factor.
-
Thanks for this, do you have any spring manufacture recomendations?
-
Boge gas dampers and eibach -40mm springs sound your best bet.
-
id suggest koni sports dampers and eibach springs, its a great setup
putting lowering springs on standard dampers is a stupid idea, you might as well cut the original springs!
-
My vote would go for koni dampers and eibach springs
They're fantastic :afro:
Not overly cheap though :undecided:
But I'd say definately worth it :)

I run Koni adjustable shocks with eibach -60mm springs. Prob too low for your requirements but handling is top draw.
Also know this might sound a bit obvious but a good set of tyres (i've got Toyo Proxes T1S's) and have the tracking correctly set improve the set up incredibly.
However best handling golf i driven was running fully adjustable gas coilovers, was a tough ride but handling was different levels, looking about £300 minimum though.
My suggestion, -35/-40 springs and a decent set of adjustable dampers, good tyres, correct tracking and you'll have a B road legend ready to roll.
-
what about the hot tuning coilover deal ??
adjustability man , that's the way forward

Eibach designed to work fine with OEM dampers.

...and sh1t ride quality, he said he wanted to keep the car original, so he isn't going to do a huge drop.

Yep and great if your on a budget, i paid £90 for eibach springs & boge gas dampers off here

good bargain that! hows the exhaust?
-
are the hot tuning coilovers really harsh then ???
cos i have asked santa for them

LOL cool mate, although the car is still off the road. Ive just finished fitting new brake pipes/ bias valve and adding new fluid. Getting new tyres fitted tomorrow then she's ready for an MOT whooooop! Its been a long 5 months, phew.

No not at all unless your slammed to the deck and even then it's not that bad I had cheap springs on standard shocks and they were much worse.
-
Crikey, amazing response thanks all. I will need to check the prices but think that the Koni/Eibach route to be the best compromise. Do I need to fit uprated top mounts or performance bushes? The car is totally standard and on the original shocks so wondered if this would be a good idea? Also (yes lots of questions and do not want to take the p) but would a strut brace be a good idea aswell?
-
I wouldn't drop the car by more than 25/30mm, well not if you drive near speed humps
-
Loads of speed humps, any ideas if I go for a -25 drop?
-
Eibach springs and koni dampers.
-
I'm guessing that was obvious to everyone else but me! LOL thanks for the advice all I will check out the prices. Cheers!

They won't be too bad, I guess they are good for the price, but don't compare to £500+ coils.

Ideally yes you should get some g60 top mounts, I have :afro:
Didn't go for performance bushes due to lack of funds, but they will also be worthwhile :)
Strut braces will have a slight effect, but nothing massive
Not really ideal if you want to keep your car standard-ish either :)

Probably a good idea to get some bump stops as well while you're at it

Definately!
If not brand new OEM ones, then uprated ones! :)

I have boge turbo's on standard springs with g60 top mounts. Have recentley replaced most of my bushes with polyeurethane ones but would like to upgrade the dampers to afformentioned koni sports with eilbach springs. My hijacking question is, with the top mounts in place do i need poly bump stops aswell, i dont really know what they do to know if i would need them or not.
Sorry for butting in
-
Top mounts aren't really relevant to bump stops mate :)
Bump stops stop your damper from effectively completely bottoming out that can damage it!
OEM ones are pretty decent quality, however, if you're going to be working your suspension hard, poly bump stops are the way to go.
Kind of wish I had them on my car now, just for piece of mind.
I believe you can run both as well, for extra protection.
Hope this helps :afro:

Okay cool, so will need them aswell. Cheers

In preparation for the replacement shocks/springs I bought a set of G60 top mounts, however I bought only a pair, do the same ones also fit the rear shocks?
Thanks

No they aren't.
iirc you can buy replacement top mounts for the rear, but I didn't with my suspension set up.
Have a look on the etka thread, there should be a diagram there with the bits you need, if any :afro:

Has anyone got a picture of their Mk2 16v dropped 60mm on shocks and springs rather than coilovers? Just want to gauge what it might look like - would prefer the fine tuning of the height with coilies, but want the comfort of a good spring and shock combo.
-
this is mine dropped on koni ajustables and eibach pro kit 30-40 mm drop handles very well and is a nice ride must add i do have eibach arbs and car is fully polybushed
