Title: MK2 GTI 16V ENGINE TROUBLE PLEASE HELP
Post by: shaunmk2gti on 23 November 2008, 20:44
I have a mk2 gti 16v golf and on friday night on way home i backed off the accelerator in 2nd gear and the rev counter went down to zero and the car lost power then picked straight back up. Saturday morning it broke down i was going round a roundabout slowly in 2nd gear then as i accelerated it backfired and lost all power then cut out and wouldnt start again. My mechanic towed me home and and about 45 minutes after it broke down it started eventually then cut out so its not cambelt or pistons. I tried it today (sunday) and it wouldnt start.

Cars done 110000 miles with fsh bought it a week ago off and was running fine, It was my best mates brothers who has had it 6 years and serviced it every 5000 miles and never thrashed just the odd blast now and again it had a new dizzy not long ago.

Please help

It sounds as if it is something to do with the ignition. Check that the dizzy is tight, then go for the HT leads. I suspect the one that goes from the coil to the dizzy cap.

If that is not the problem, then go a little deeper into the ignition, but keep it simple. Its usually the easy things that go wrong. Start with the HT leads as I said before, then look at the distributor cap and rotor arm and work your way to the plugs.

could be a hall sender fault in the dizzy, when the rev counter dropped was the engine still running or was it stone dead?  Could also be a problem with the ign live wire to the coil, check for 12v at the black terminal on the coil with the ign on.  Also worth takin the plug off the ignition control unit and checking the pins for corrosion :)

Only to replace it with a Porsche 911 though. :smug: Justifiable change me thinks! Still gonna happen, but not just yet.

yeah that sounds like you have a wiring fault to the coil and/or dizzy... I do indeed have a 16v, unfortunatly I'm busy this weekend though :(
I'd start by poping off the plug to the ignition controller and TCI thingy under the plastic cover at the very top of the engine bay, driver side.  make sure the pins on these are free of any corrosion.  then look at the coil which is the round thing where the middle spark plug wire from the distributor goes to, check all the wires here are in good nick.  Then look at all the wiring to the side/rear of the head itself, look at any earth cables brown or brown white, and check any sensor wires for damage.

Put jump leads off my van to golf this morning as still waiting for my mechanic to collect it. It started straight away ticked over nicely for about 10 seconds rev counter dropped to zero then cut out. After this it wouldnt start again. F

Fuel pump is buzzing when i turn the ignition on so dont think its that so it must be an ignition or electrical problem. Going to check plugs and leads dizzy looks ago as it wasnt put on long ago

ah, sounds like its about to die and/or the lifter pump has packed in so its starved of fuel.  Pull the electrical plug off it and turn the key 1 click, you should hear the in-tank lifter pump prime.

Okay mate will have a look so do you reckon its letting a little bit of fuel through thats why it started again for a few seconds then cut out. I hope thats the problem as want to get it fixed.

yeah k-jet needs a very high pressure before fuel will even get past the injectors (around 5 bar)  If the main is damaged or starved of fuel it wont be able to maintain this pressure.  I had similar symptoms but in my case it was a blocked fuel filter, so its worth swapping that for a cheap and quick fix!
Its also possible for the lift pump to make a noise but still be bust, so my test above isnt conclusive (woo big scientific soundy word ) unless the pump doesnt make any noise at all!

Hi got my golf fixed today   it was the distributor mechanic said he wasn't getting a spark but was getting a live feed coming into the distributor but nothing coming out. The distributor was £79.50 +vat from GSF. Once we fitted it we got a strong spark. Took a while to start it as spark plugs and the bores were flooded with petrol from when i tried starting it a few times when it broke down. Now its back to normal. Thanks for your help
