Title: Oil filter mount -
Post by: JC on 21 November 2008, 20:31
Right then, one of my many jobs is to sort the oil leak out 1.8 6v btw

the only place i can see it be leaking from is the square block that the oil filter screws onto where its bolted to the front of the engine

this

the engine had a load of work done before I bought it, and this is one of many leak it had

so, advice ????? tips etc

Thanks in advance

Thats the oil cooler.

Spin the filter off, you will see a bolt on the long thread that holds the filter on. If you undo this the cooler should drop off iirc. It has a rubber seal around the top. I dunno if you can get the rubber seal seperate or if you need a new cooler, but its only 20 quid ish from gsf i think.

Oh, you will also have to change your coolant when you take the cooler off, as its got two water hoses running into it.

hth

oh, and you need a very deep socket to get the nut off that holds the cooler on!

Get ready for a ghetto idea....

This idea might suck, but if you steam cleaned it first, could you paint it with some hardcore mo'fo engine paint, perhaps using gasket sealant first, to seal the crack??  It can't be leaking under much pressure. Perhaps 5 coats of engine paint would be enough to seal the crack?

Just a thought. Told you it was ghetto.

lookin cloisely, it seems the oil is actually leaking from that upper oil sensor, if you follow the black sticky stain up it seems to originate from there :)

anyway back to the picture, you can see the oil starts from the middle of that rear sensor, the mounting face is pretty far back from there.  Not that that means anything though, oil leaks can behave in mysterious ways
but that would be my 1st step, replace that sensor and clean up the housing as best ya can, see if it comes back and from where.

Lot of yorkshire folk on here living down south, myself included. Its where the good money is
