Title: MK2 Dizzy problem
Post by: Uruk Hai on 21 November 2008, 15:14
I have a 91 8V GTI and a while back it developed a problem where the car would run fine on short journeys but if I went on a longer run (over about 6 miles) it wouldnt start again until it had cooled right down. It turned out to be something in the dizzy (probably hall sender) but fortunately I had a spare dizzy and now the old girls fitted and time'd up she's running as sweet as a nut again. I just thought I would post this as I've never had a probelm like this before with any car and had it not been for a good mate of mine who's awesome on the spanners I may have spent a fortune trying to find what at first seemed like a intermitent problem !

when you say it wouldn't start , in what way ??

mine will start when it is warm (hot it is ok) but then it rev's slightly then pops backfires and stop's eventually

i cannot keep it running with the throttle as it just stop's

i have changed the blue temp sensor , air flow meter , plug's lead's dissy cap and rotor arm

i have a new ecu due to an earth fault after changing the clutch

the filters were changed about 3k ago including a cam belt and fuel filter

the car is a 8v digi from 1989

this problem is pi55ing me off now as i have spent a fortune on the car and getting nowhere

sounds like timing could be out when the belts were replaced.

When I say wouldnt start it was turning over and over without firing at all, then after a while it just started up almost the instant I touched the key.

Hi I have a 89 MK2 Gti and it has a misfire problem too but It can happen anytime hot or cold doesn't matter you can be driving along and it just seems to go dead the rev counter drops to zero instantly but if you turn ignition off and back on it fires up and just carries on normally. The car never misfires or anything else it runs fine appart from this every so often if anyone has any ideas please let me no its starting to really annoy me now. The cars had new ht leads dizzy cap and spark plugs and someone has said it could be a dizzy problem
