I have a 1997 2.0ltr gti and all forward gears are spot on but have noticed when in reverse and the revs are increased slightly then the lever jumps out of gear.
Any suggestions?

Sign of the gearbox on its way out unfortunately..

Check him out diagnosing the problem - I was told the same exact thing by awful-gti. I got a second opinion & it turned out to be a clip worth £14 under the gaiter - not anything like a rebuild but hey the regulars know what there talkin' about!
Reverse gear popping out is a common problem with mk3's meaning bad wear on the on the internals, never heard of a clip that fix's it, you were very lucky, maybe you should have put that info up instead of mouthing off..
If you have a problem in future and wana talk to me like you are, PM me or better still come see me as your only local big man..

No need for snipey comments guys, one man just looking for possible answers.
It could be something simple such as the clips are shot
It is also a symptom of low gear oil in the box so check the level (if this is the case then 5th gear will also begin to do it then all the gears afterwards til its empty and f**ked)
or you could need an entire new box/rebuild depending on the damage sustained but the damage is normally caused by the low oil level so if you catch it in time you should be ok.

As above reverse is a weak spot, don't know of a clip that would fix it.

Tonyhotel1 you must be some kind of arse mate.... fooking do one if thats how helpfull you are, thing is for you now is that seeing as you seemed to have upset most of the regular people on here who have pointed me in the right direction for a good fix many times (thanks guys!), people will now be less inclined to help you out.
You are clearly better than the rest of us, although you couldn't sort your own gear box issues..... get lost mate.
As for the gear box, my bros girlfriends one used to do it allot, she changed the box but was told that a build would have solved the problem. There are some places that may take your old box as a part exchange for a recon one?
