I went and looked at this GTI convertable today, dodgy colour I know but its a bit of a project and ill spray it next year. Got a few issues, drivers seat is loose, and headlining inside has come away from roof, think thats the best way to describe it. Just needs a good tidy up really. Its got 95K on the clock and it feels like it needs a bit of a service. The outside hood is very good (and has the cover).

Do any of you reconise these alloys?
And what colour do you think I should go with? used to be white (the engine bay is still white)
Let me know
-
Ooo..Where in Tyne & Wear as Im sure I have seen this cab!
Castellets..
I like the white.. if you are changing it..you must do the lot or it will look silly, imo..
Dinx

Its in South Shields mate. Can you re attach the headlining or do you have to buy a new hood?
-
I think its baby blue paint? Cant tell very well from the pictures.
Looks reasonably straight though, I take it no mot/tax?
Ask for more pictures or go and have a look - if it drives and isnt too bad underneath then got to be worth a go at 500 notes for a cab gti... :)
-
Driver's seat loose? Does it just rock a bit? If it does it's missing the nylon bits on the rear runners. Easyish to replace. Some testers will fail it on this.
-
Yea it is baby blue paint. I went to see it last night, looks pretty strait to me, the paint job wasn't amazing theres a few little bits need sorting. Couldn't see it started but im going back on saturday for a drive. Guy said he would take 450 for it as well. No tax or mot. Does anybody know about the headlining?
Spoke to a sprayers yesterday who said he could spray it back white for 600 quid. So if its solid, could have a half decent cab for a grand.
What do you lot think?
Yea if does rock a little bit on the drivers seat. So could be the nylon bits on the runners?
-
Headling and the roof are not one piece, so yes you should be able to stick the headlining back up and you wont need a new roof just because the headlining is loose.
If that's a real CC model (he described it as coco chanel, but it's really called a Christmas Convertible :nerd: ) then he's completely ruined a pretty rare mk1 cabby. The original roof will of had cc decals on it but that's probably long gone as they only made these for one year and the roof is impossible to get.
Don't forget it's got no mot or tax so I'm not sure it's even worth £450 if you want me to be honest. :undecided:
-
Well yea it must of been a cc at one point because the headlining is still has the cc's on it. The seats are now just standard GTI seats now tho and the roof is not a cc one. What do you say if its solid tho? The garage could spray it back white and then I could have a good cab for a grand?
If I am going to get it it will be sprayed back white and brought back to an original condition.
I dunno, im in two minds to either get this or not bother again until next summer but prices will be higher.
Anybody reconsise the wheels? or are they just rubbish halfords type?
Lee

They are LeCastellet. Originally fitted to the classic line cabby between 91 and 93.
-
If it's solid and it doesn't need much to get through an MOT then a cabby for 1k is about the right price for that age to be honest. I don't think you'll be getting a bargain as I reckon if it was still a full CC in half decent condition it would be worth around £1500.
If the wheels are 15" then they will be from the Rivage (91 - 94) and are called Le Castellettes as Dinx and Komenda already mentioned.

Thanks for all your input! In the end I couldn't be bothered with it so ive upped my budget to 1500 quid and ive found two that I like the look of
1) first one is a white clipper cab 1.8 carb with a excellent hood, 6 months MOT, the tinyest bit of rust on the edge of the bonnet, 77,000 on the clock. No service history. Its a power hood but it doesnt work. Checked all the usual places for rust and its all ok. this is up for 1500
2) this is a dark grey metalic one with a good power hood that works. has 108,000 on the clock. The bodywork is excellent being resprayed not long ago has loads of service history. this is a 1.8 GTI but needs new valve hydrolic lifters. this is up for 1350.
What do guys think is the best? I have no idea how much the new lifters would be. Is the injection engine better that the carb? Cheers for your help again
-
Both sound quite good ,but I'd be suspicious of a 77k car without any service history to be honest. Also, the Clippers had loads of carb trouble with the old Pierburg and people put a Weber on them. Personally it would be a no brainer, I'd go for a GTI over a Clipper any day of the week (plus I don't really like white cabs), there's not that much performance difference though driving day to day but I think the clippers were 90bhp and the GTI should be about 112. 108k aint that bad, I sold my cab with 132k on it a couple of years ago. Don't know how much the lifters are though I'm afraid. Get a price for the lifters and see how negoatiable the 1350 is. I think there's still room to go down there, especially in the current economic climate and 1100 for their Christmas is better than nothing. Try your luck, the worst they can say is no.

Cheers for all your help gibby, well another little update, ive seen a mars red tintop non sunroof model with a 2.0 KR in it, little bit of rust on the edges of the drivers door and wing and thats going for 550 so I may even go down that route....
anyways just poped down to the bank and drew some wonga out, wait and see if people get back to me
-
No problem, you're welcome. Maybe it's because I had a cab for four years, but I'd have a tintop over a cab any day these days.
-
a Cab would be nice for a bit of summer cruising if we ever get any....

Alright mate, take it you've left Oxford now then?
As for the hydraulic lifters, you're looking at 50-60 quid for the set from gsf and vwspares iirc. But, a 16v tintop for £550................... DO IT!

Nice one, get some pics up!

2.0 won't be a KR unless it's been rebored. KR is 1.8 16v. 6A 9A or ABF is the 2l 16v :)
