Hi there chaps, new here as you can see.
Currently have a 182 Cup which I am growing out of (even though it has been to hoot to own) and I am possibly looking at getting a GTI (Edition 30 preferably) or a Astra VXR (don't shoot me ).
I have a budget of around 18k, but want to spend some money on mods too (always been a big mod man with all my cars ). I have done quiet a bit of research on both cars and can see that the Ed30 gets a lot bigger gains for less money over the VXR, but haven't ruled out a Stage 3 one yet.
So few questions if you don't mind?
1. (Without sounding chavvy ) Who has the quickest GTI on here (acceleration wise, 0-60, 1/4 mile etc) and how much did it cost them to get to current stage of tuning? Reason I ask is that I often do track days/1/4 mile days with my mate (who currently has a 300bhp VXR), so need to not be lagging behind anymore
2. What sort of effect on grip do these modded monsters get? Don't mind having traction issues to a certain point, but don't want to be spinning all the way through the gears..
3. Do many of chaps go to track days/1/4 mile days etc?
Sorry to go on, but the thought of upgrading to the Golf is getting more and more tempting and with it being a great all rounder, will be nice to have a comfy ride for a change too. Oh and obviously wipe the smile of my mates face if poss..
Cheers,
Tom

Quite a few modded Ed30's on here and YES expect a slating for even mentioning the VXR on here. That is like a swear word lol.
Hurdy and a few others will be along to explain all there mods etc soon. Handling is much better over the VXR aswel so not only will you beat him in a straight line (modded) but on every corner too. A friend had a modded VXR and he managed to go through a couple of clutches and a turbo so it looks like the engines cant handle all that power as well as the bullet proof VW
I wish I had gone for the DSG gearbox now but wasnt that clued up on it at the time of purchase, so definately consider a test drive with both types of gearboxs not to mention you will out gear your mate aswel.
Also look for little extras like highline, MFSW and the satnav its a very tasty finishing touch, I have none which irritates me...just got so excited when I saw the car and had to have it without doing my research
Traction wont be any worse than the VXR with similar power. There are a few people running at REVO stage 2 with fuel pumps, filters, S3 Intercoolers, Leon Cupra front Brakes, Quaiffe LSD...the list is endless, just depends how far and how much you want to do.
HTH Steve

Welcome to the forum Tom
Soooo many questions!!
There are only a few people who tend to do the 1/4 miles etc on here and the most consistent abuser user of the 1/4 mile is Vtec Abuser (ben), His car hasn't gone as far as mine, but he has the knack for the pedal (DSG) off the line 0-60 in 5.05 secs and a 13.2 quarter is his best so far off a remap and full exhaust system (not even an aftermarket intake!).
Mine is more of an allrounder for handling and stopping as well as going!! (see sig), but come the new year I'm hoping to get into the 12's at the pod
Traction will be an issue with any FWD car that has over 300bhp, it is the modifications that you put in place to help stifle the wheelspin that becomes more of a priority. Anti-lift kit, Torque arm insert, Coilovers, ARB's,tyres, Quaife ATB diff and even DSG will all help with traction off the line. By far the best way of controlling any traction issues though is the old right foot modulation
Straight line speed isn't everything though and for track days you'll need extra stopping power too. There are plenty of reputable aftermarket brake upgrades for the GTI/ED30.
Next year I'm hoping to get to several trackdays and some 1/4 mile days, along with the traditional willy waving rolling road days
I've driven the VXR :embarassed: and two of my younger (less good looking ) mates have had them in the past and they simply do not compare to the Standard GTI, let alone an Edition 30. A VXR is more of a blunt instrument to the GTI's scalpel. The VXR isn't a bad car, it's just not as fast, as roomy, doesn't handle as well as and isn't as classy as the GTI  Then again I'm biased.

Do you think a sticky would be a good idea with links to all the best offers and the available parts for the GTI?
For example
Remaps
REVO - Link to supplier and best price here
APR - Link to supplier and best price here
Exhausts
APR - Link to supplier and best price here
Milltek - Link to supplier and best price here
etc...just an idea?

*cough cough* R32 :lipsrsealed:

I have an Edition30 and it's cost me around £1500 to get it to 324bhp.
Oh and the Astra's pap! :afro:
-

nice idea but we can't really single out one supplier, prices changing all the time and various deals on offer etc

Good point.. Be a cracking buy that..
Mine has cost me £800 to get 330bhp-ish... Bar-fookin-gain!!!

Have you not considered a Leon Cupra? Cheap as chips second hand and huge brakes as standard so would make a fantastic trackday weapon doubled up as a perfectly useable road car.

Thanks for the replies guys..
Cupra's are nice, but not sure about the interior to be honest. Now i'm spending a few more £ compared with the last car, I want a nicer cabin..
Also I am looking for a standard car to start with as want to do the mods myself (strange I know )..

Still think it would be a good sticky to have, it can be left open and if someone happens to find a cheaper supplier they can post it up and the moderator can edit the original post and delete the reply to save people filtering through it all.
Links to the brake upgrade from Seat etc would be useful to have on there rather than someone posting up asking where to get them from.

That's totally understandable, that way you'll know exactly what you have done and that the components are what you wanted. As you know it's a buyer's market at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if you can't get an Edition 30 for around the £14k to £15k depending on spec.
There are some great deals on R32's out there. Here is an 07 for under £15k

Here's an 08 Edition 30, which must be one of the last to be built, a bit expensive though.

Won't of been one of the last built on a 57 plate mate. Mine's a 08 for a start. Plus it also has the old Nav unit and not the RNS 510..
You're right though, it is dear..
