Title: wet weather + roundabouts = :(
Post by: don_231 on 19 November 2008, 13:30
hi, although iv been browsing the forum for a while i only signed up recently. anyway after wiring my sub in proberly on monday night i went and totalled the front end of my 1.9 mk3 when dropping a friend off back home.

going downhill to roundabout. not going fast as was raining turned wheel but just slid straight, mounted the kurb hiagonally then mounted a small wall.

after getting it towed in the results of this were totalled the

front bumper + splitter
radiator
o/s shocker
o/s wishbone
o/s driveshaft
x1 mint bbs wheel :(
o/s wing

talk about a piss take, the worst bit was we were just slidding slowly downhill and couldnt do feck all. not sure wether im gona fix her up or just scrap it and buy something else as the front windowscreen was cracked already.

i know this aint the classifieds but if you know to a mk3 diesel or have any bits that iv totalled give me a shout. either that or just lol

That was unlucky, hope no-one was hurt, apart from your pride, and your pride and joy.

Roundabouts can be nasty places, especially when lorries spill diesel fuel out of overfilled tanks.

The diesel will make it like hitting sheet ice, not a lot you can do, you basically become a passenger.

Hope you get it fixed up.

Cheers

Paul

Thats a p!ss take ... 2 years ago in my old car on a frosty morning I experienced a similar thing ... was going slow, literally 20mph approached a round about but my steering just went light and the car just slid and buckled the kerb ... no damage but a buckled alloy wheel, but that experience was terrifying as you have absolutely no control of the car what so ever.

Good luck on getting the car sorted, or the insurance paying out :)

The road camber changes also so that shifts the weight of the car to the opposite of where you want most grip!
A fwd car losing grip on front is always bad and very difficult to recover! It can be done if you have time/space but not on a roundabout with kerbs etc close by!

Same happens with mine.

There's a particularly nasty little roundabout as I get to work. When it's raining I go round it like Miss Daisy as it just goes sideways otherwise!

Have stuck new tyres on the rear, which has improved grip slightly, and there is a good amount of thread on the front so don't know what the problem is.

The real problem is staying on the throttle. Take your food of and it should snap back!

Roundabouts are bad for being slippy in wet as well as oild and stuff you get a build up of rubber so most go like a skating rink!

Just go easy!
