Hi all, My new 16V is mint apart it has 180,000 on the clock, However it has been taken care of very well, and runs fine. For the future how much would it cost to get it reconditioned? need a rough price for labour aswell so I canput some money away if the day ever happens :)

Thinking back to my rebuild. Depends on your definition of recondition.
If you get the block rebored and new piston heads, then as long as your buying off the shelf .25mm and .5mm oversize piston heads, you should be under ?300. If you have uneven wear and need to go 1mm oversize, then you wont see much change from ?500.
Not sure how much the main bearings cost. Not much though. They ought to be redone at the very least.
Then you get onto the head - new valve followers cost around ?16 each, and you'll need 16, no point in doing things by half. Cam chain ?40 if VAG Counter part.
If your cams are okay - then you are lucky. You need to check for wear.
If you are unlucky with cams, VAG replacement parts are 300 and 700 respectively for the two cams. At which point 3rd cams are a cheaper choice, or find a destroyed 16v to nab them from.
On top of that you need a grease monkey to do all the work.
If you go third party parts then you can save money. But then you are taking that small risk in quality.

VAG redid their Mk2 price list last year, and I think some things went down, and other things went up.

Change to oil every 4000 miles/4 months with semi-synthetic and you'll never need to rebuild the engine.

Cheers guyz, that helps me loads. Well I'm running optimax and adding a liter per 100o miles ish!
Hopefully she'll go on for another 180000 miles :)

also use oil flush whenever you do a change and it might be worth changing/cleaning the oil pickup so that the top of the engine doesnt get starved of oil

Oil flush as in engine flush?
I was always under the illusion that this can make things worse. Over the years there will be crap built onto the internals of the engine. This will take some off and just loosen some resulting in damage to the engine over a period of time? Unless it has been used regularly when the engine was brand new.
Correct or not?

i heard that it can ruin the engine as well?
maybe just a dream but im sure somebody told me that ???
