Well, after asking for advice on which HT spark combo's and dizzy replacement, it appears that the old gal is suffering again with the PAS. It appears that when i turn the wheel it causes a shudder and squeal from under the bonnet as though the PAS pump is knackered...now I know it ain't as it was replaced less than 1000 miles ago. :undecided:
Can the tension in the belt make that much difference?? It just seems that its worse if the car is not given any rev's (if that makes sense)??? If you give the throttle a blip whilst turning at low speed its less noticable. I'm worried bout tightening it further as the actually pulley wheel snapped last time and had to be replaced with a visit to the stealership for the part.
-
Sounds like the tension could be the problem, mine does it now and then due to the fact that I fitted a slightly longer belt just to get it to fit and mine to is better when the revs are lifted !
-
Check the deflection in the belt - I think it should be between 5mm and 10m, but check first as I'm not 100%.
-
5mm to 10meters? bit of a wide range there
if belt deflection is ok (i go for 5mm usually) then check the pullies, if they look a bit pollished give em a good rough up and see where that gets you.

Hehe, I couldn't remember - I always worry that I might fook someones engine up with bad advice, hence the "check first" caveat!
-
Conker I'll remember that!!! Always double check and get a second opinion from conker's posts LOL!
The belt is brand new as it was replaced at the same time as the pulley...and the pump as I said originally. Belt was okayish to begin with and as its gone on its getting worse...
I presume by deflection we are talking tension? The pretensioning screw doesn't have much left to go tho?! :undecided: so unsure how to tighten it up further...proper belt as well as the first one was a bloody fan belt so checked the VW parts code and got another!
Anything other than that guys?

haynes recons 10mm deflection is ok half way between crank n pas pulley, so have a shufti. the mk2 tensioning system is horrible though, that T bolt especially often ends up broke or bent.
as i say though, check the pulleys for polishing and give em a good rough up if they're a bit shiny lookin :)
its either that or replace the rack ;)

Oi!
And ahem, may I point out my 5mm to 10mm range seems to be in order all of a sudden!!
-
yeah but you said 10 meters at 1st, i was just pullin ya chain
-
well bugger all of you cos now it don't matter!!! The bloody bolt sheered leaving half in the tensioner!!!!! arrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh
And as a point it was well above that at around 2-3cm!!! but its all irrelevant...any one want a mk2
cheers both of you tho...i now need a new bolt and some patience to drill the old one out and some dry weather in which to do it
-
hmm, hold de phone i may have the bits you require sat about in me bits box, i shall have a look.
-
legend if you do

i have been having a silly little problem with the PAS on my golf
it would work and not work when i was turning the wheel (mainly on cold morning's) belt chattering but it was new when i did the cambelt and tensioned correctly .
so i undid one of the pressure pipes and moved the rack from lock to lock draining all the shi%e old oil out , than added some Forte PAS addative and new oil
ooooooh it's smooooth now and no chattering YIPPEE

yeah but you said 10 meters at 1st, i was just pullin ya chain
Haha, I didn't notice that!! It would have to be a bloody big belt to get 10m deflection!!
-
will try to give that a go over the weekend...pretty sure i just topped it up last time
