i have an oil leak and i can see where its dripping from but cant find the source! is there any ways to find the source or any common places to check?
-
hello first of all is it engine oil or gearbox oil, then you should have it steam cleaned then start from there.were do i start it could be rocker cover gasket, oil pressure switch, front main oil seal, rear main oil seal, sump gasket, sump plug and the list goes on and on and on hope it helps scott.

i had a minor oil leak when i first got the car (just a couple of drips from the sump gasket), i bought some redex oil treatment and added it to the mixture and it stopped the leak!
i believe you can also get oil leak stopper as well.

haha reet its dripping from what i think is the gearbox! looks like its a job for the weekend, cant do nothing after work this time of year!
cheers for input

okay iv jus been for a short run and i dont seem to be dripping anymore? is it possible for my oil to just start leaking then stop after a couple of days?
-
Not usually. like bow said try and find out what oil it is. Gear oil smells baaaaaad. If its coming from between the box and engine it could be either oil, which is a box out anyway. Or somewhere else thats working its way down to that area.

okay cheers ill check it properly over weekend!

defo just engine oil! warning light bleeps and flashed at me today! i checked the level with dipstick and it seems pretty full? it cant be a fault with sensor tho as it has been dropping oil! okay , rocker box clean, two pressure switches clean, im now onto the main oil seals!
CAN ANY BODY HELP WITH LOCATION OF MAIN OIL SEALS AS IM GONNA CHECK AFTER TOPPING OIL UP TOMMOROW MORNING?

I had an oil leak, dunno if its fixed yet though as I still have to give the engine a clean & check for leaks.
BUT I had the following changed: Oil Filter, Filter O-Ring, Cooler Gasket, Sump Gasket ... The leak originally looked like it was coming from behind the cooler gasket so it could of been the o-ring or cooler gasket (both £3 items from VW; original parts aswell)
My cars a valver. Fingers crossed its all sorted ... but yeah I feel for you man, get all those looked at!
