Title: Motorised sound in engine bay
Post by: stealthwolf on 15 November 2008, 22:46
Went to top up the screenwash today. Car was in garage (has been all day). Opened the car, keys in the ignition, move to step 2 (power on), autolights were switched on. Opened bonnet.

As I filled the screenwash reservoir with VW screenwash, I could hear some whining motorised noise every few seconds. Coming from left hand region of engine bay.

What was it?

....

Could it be related to the fact that you were doing things with the screenwash while the engine was running. I always do any maintenance, even fluid top-ups, with the engine off and the ignition key out.

Or it could be the car going through programmed startup routines which you don't normally hear when in the driver's seat.

High pitched squeel - goes on for about a min then stops.  Throttle body reset I think, 1.8T used to do the same.

As bacillus wrote on your other topic on mk5golfgti, it is most likely to be the throttle body callibration!

Its normal, I hear it also on mine, and most modern cars!

Ignition was off but power was on.

Cool. Thought it was something dodgy.

I've now got high-pitched whining in my head and am posting everything twice - I must have entered a parallel world!
