Dymag CF are a great benefit to the car if you read up about them.

Otherwise I like the VOLK's.

Got to be either 1 or 2 as they are the best 2 without a doubt!

Im sure the CF ones have their performance benefits.. but they just look so  . Wouldnt want to spoil the look of the Golf just for the sake of a few secs on the track. If that was the case then I would suggest just buying a different hot hatch to start with

The only thing with the Volk ME's is that the picture shown is the "face 2" design which is more concave. This looks awesome on the rear of a BMW but it changes quite a lot when you see the "face 1" with ET50 on a MkV Golf. Good, light wheels though.

Defo a good point there!! It not just about the look of the wheels... but how they look on the golf itself

Hmmmm .... as someone with little or no knowledge on which of those wheels come as 18" or 19" that isnt a very helpfull clue. But it think I might change my guess to the CF ones! With that much CF already... it would be rude not to

My reasoning behind the purchase

Wanted some decent quality lightweight 18" wheels and tyres for under £1k

I asked for an addition to the alloys too. They can do steel inserts that are built into the alloys and strengthen the bolting area for cars with higher performance, so these were incorporated too.

Wheels are 19.8lb which is a saving of 6.7lb (3kg) per wheel.

They are built in the UK to competition specs and come with a 2 year warranty against manufacturing faults.

They open up the brake area at the front of the car nicely too.

I decided against Black as I thought the silver would match better (which I think it does quite well)

My dad's inherited modding pot still has room for a few more bits before I have to delve into any joint savings

I tried on some black ones with the red lip and they didn't quite float my boat with the silver of the car. They look better in the flesh to quote the eternal phrase

Oh and I spotted these whilst I was there, they do look quite lush, especially with the Black and silver centre cap

I think they are marmite type of wheels, but you bought them for a purpose as well, most people dont.
I also think they look better in the flesh.

My opinion and not positive im afraid....

Completely devalues the look of the car in my vew. Looks like a bog standard Golf that some lad has pieced together to look like a GTi.

But that's based completely on looks. Performance wise, well above my Ed30. 3kg a wheel is quite impressive over so called BBS lightweight alloys.

I dont think that it looks good, BUT, I will reserve full judgement until I see it in real life - I'm all too aware of how you can never really tell from a photograph.

For sure though, the weight saving, warranty and bolt strengthening is a huge factor - so for the overall results when taken into account with your other (and future) modifications, I think you've made a great choice.

:) :)

sorry john, dont want to echo what everyone has said but not for me, i think your car looks toooooo silver, fair enough its a cooool performence mod but i defo would have gone with a nice 19, even lm reps over thows. sorry mate and im just saying this coz im your pal but what were you thinking? id prefere the 18 ch's (std wheels) powdercoated black, just my opinion so dont take it to heart. as long as your happy then thats al that matters :afro:

oh and just to add, id take a lil more advantage of owning coilovers, your car looks higer on those than std, personally id drop it down a lil (10mm-15mm) and get them sprayed gunmetal, would look alot better  :undecided:

oh and I guessed correctly to
Title: Re: What alloys has Hurdy bought? Now with pics!
Post by: Hurdy on 17 November 2008, 18:20
Ooooooh, not a lot of lovers then

Never mind, I bought them for myself as everyone says. The performance feature was more the issue for me, rather than bling (for a change)

You cannot be too careful with what wheels you choose as an aftermarket upgrade. Even performance alloys such as OZ are now cast in China and sent to Europe for finishing otherwise I would have probably gone for some Ultraleggera's. :nerd:

At the pricepoint they are an awesome wheel that I don't have to get too precious about if I kerb them, just buy a replacement and move on . My plan is to do several trackdays next year including the 'ring and so these wheels are perfect for this use (would have a hissy fit if I'd bought Work VS-XX and kerbed them :lipsrsealed:)

I hope you can all see beyond the looks alone and see my reasoning behind my ultimate choice

The huge unsprung weight diff is really a plus , can def see that.
I bet the car 'feels' quite a bit different.
I reckon you should have these for track (with semi slicks road tyres) and a set of volks for posing

nice wheels, i'm a bit half and half on them, but for the performance factor they would be well worth it.

hmm half and half, i would get them resparyed anthracite and lower the car a tad and i think it might look better

Yeah, purchased from Billyboys

I haven't had much of a chance to really give them a proper work out, but there is a positive difference although I'm not sure if it is the new alloys or the tyres. Once it dries out up here, I'll let the horsies loose for a play

Te be honest, I don't like 98% of aftermarket tyres for the Golf GTI unless made by BBS.  These are no exception.  However, I am intrigued by the effects on performance and if they do enhance it, then its a good mod.  Only thing is, why can't performance alloy manufacturers make decent designs like BBS do?

Mods fall into one of two camps usually

It is very rare that you get that ultimate mod which covers both aspescts

I am not fan of these rims either, despite them being light and all. Look too common to me (similar to many others, hard to distinguish from distance).
I was at Oettinger yesterday, saw a white and a black TTs with Oettinger RXX charcoal 19-inchers. I do not know how much they weigh, but they look very nice, with a stylish "Oettinger" cut into one of the spokes.

Its those that dont protect their rims or curb them that have issues with white worm.

Hehe

So what are the show rims going to be then Mr Hurdy?

I haven't made my mind up yet, there is soooo much choice out there I'm spoilt.

Not really worth looking until the beginning of next year anyway, unless a must buy bargain pops up.

20s would look great on a big-body-style GTI.
Check out Oettinger RXX. I saw them "in person" in 20 inch diameter. They look stylish and very very awesome.
