Post by: chrisj on 14 November 2008, 11:51
Basically i haven't long part ex'd my 150 bhp gt tdi cos my missus wanted a mini and i wasn't using the car much anymore.got a mini which we are selling. what's everyone who's driven both think of them?i was going to remap the turbo if i choose that over the diesel. just thinking turbo is a fair bit cheaper to buy and i would have money left?
thanks

Personally mate I would get the Turbo. Dont get me wrong the torque of the diesels is good and so is the fuel consumption. But will be alot cheaper tuning the petrol turbo just my opinion though.

all depends on the mileage and types of journey you do

short and infrequent and low mileage - get the petrol

10K and over and longish journeys i.e. more than 15-20 minutes get the derv

I've never driven a golf turbo but what are they like remapped cos people say they are disappointing when they are standard. loved my 150 but still prefer a petrol. don't do high mileage either so thats so of pushing me towards the petrol

Havent had mine mapped yet but will def be doing soon. The car is transformed when mapped so I have heard. Just look at all the reviews in the remapping section and that will answer that question mate. If you aint gonna be doing high miles go for the Turbo as Rhyso said.

Nail / head contact acheived.

You have to be driving a lot of miles to make the extra purchase costs of the diesel worth it. Plus you have to like diesels to start with.

i did love my diesel but that's when i was doing about 400 miles a week or more.prob only doing bout 150 now so don't think it really makes sense money wise to go for the diesel cos the turbos are relatively cheap now

You need to do a lot of miles to see a saving with the diesel, I would go for the turbo.

Not really, at the current prices you need to achieve somewhere between 5 and 6 mpg more in the diesel for it to become equal in terms of cost per mile. Based on my experiences with modern diesels, that should be easy without even trying.

Don't forget that the diesels are only £120 a year to tax...
