Right, as some of you may have read. My 8v GTi died a couple of weeks ago.... sob.
I have tried all sorts of things to get it going again:
- New Coil Pak
- New Dizzy cap
- Checked all leads for sparks etc.
- Changed fuel pump relay
- Checked the fuel lines were not blocked to the engine, all okay.
- All electrical connections appear to be okay.
I'm going to take all the plugs out just to see if they are damaged then after that I have no idea. :undecided:
The battery is on charge now to make sure its full of life next time I try to start the beast.
Can anyone think of another reason why it wouldn't start, it turns over fine but doesn't seem to want to kick into life, every now and again the exhaust pops whilst trying to start.
The only other thing I can think of is that the whole distributer may need changing?
Thanks for any ideas I can try, in the mean time I will have to carry on driving the Land Rover around and crying everytime I go near a petrol station!

Check the hall sensor, (crankshaft position sensor) sits on top of the dissy three wires on a plug, might have some moisture in the plug or a broken wire or the sender could be shafted. Can you not get it on vagcom and read the codes?
-
Have you checked the timing belt?

Checked most of the plugs etc, i'll give that one another look at, i know the one you mean.

Have you checked the timing belt?
No not done that, have no idea how to either! any pointers?
-
Are you able to bump start the car?
-
Are you able to bump start the car?
No it won't, if I could then it would start on the key I would have thought?!
-
the majority of the time yes.. But not always.
If it still doesnt start when you bump it then thats my idea out the window.. sorry chap!
But the timing belt is on the left of the engine, just under the air filter feed etc.. Will have a black plastic cover over it, just clip that off and you will see if the belt is ok or not
-
Ah do you mean timing belt AKA 'cam belt'?
If so then already checked that and all is okay!
-
Sorry for an obvious suggestion, but it does have fuel in it?
Have you made sure fuel is getting to the engine?
-
Have you checked the crank sensor? Its a favorite meal for these engines.
Sits under/ near the front engine mount.

Yep half a tank and took the fuel line off then turned it over..... goes squirted out all over the place so i'd say the pump etc is fine!

Not checked that one yet, i'll do that as well this weekend.
Thanks everyone i'll keep you all posted to how I get on.

if you can borrow or have vagcom it should tell you if the crank sensor has gone, but that would be my bet to

     S H E IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!
You'll never guess what it was, when the guy came to recover me the other week he took apart the dizzy cap lead etc to see if they were all wet. When he put it back together, although the leads were in the right order on the cap he had moved them all round the 2 places so, the firing order was out.
so after finding where top dead center was, it pointed the rotor arm at number one on the dizzy cap so icould then put the leads back into the right order. She fired up on the first turn of the key!
At least I have some new bits on the engine now and know allot more about how it all works after taking it all apart, thanks for everyones help on this one.
Here are some pictures of after as I thought she should have a wash.
